Anyone for instant replay?/Week 4 comments, reaction

Here's the place to make post game comments on Week Four games...

Wall vs. Middletown South..should there be replay in high school football where practical? Probably not, but just throwing it out there what with all the video now at games.

Was Wright over the goal line on 2-point conversion?

Would outcome have been different if Blaze Montenegro played for Wall in the second half?

Will Middletown South win that fifth consecutive sectional title???

Here's a game that lived up to its billing, that's for sure.

Player of the Year - Campbell or Wright (others)? Yes, I know it just four weeks into the season. Just tossing it up for your views. By the way..both are teriffic kids. Kudos to Wright for his post game interviews.

Howell vs. Lacey.....Lamirande's unexpected return!! Rebels better than last year??
Southern: best start (3-0) since 90! Then they lost three straight. Where did the offense come from??.

Anyone know if Southern ever started 4-0???

Reminder: RALLY ROUND TABLE WEEK 4 on line, RALLYCAST of Midd. South-Wall on line. Scores and many halftime scores on line in near Realtime as well - and Scoreline at 1-800-822-9770 (ext.4470). Outside NJ 1-800-248-2217...

Donte Gilliard starred on offense, defense in overtime win over Lacey

LAKEHURST , NJ – The U.S. Army Mid-Atlantic Recruiting Battalion is proud to announce that Long Branch ’s 5-11/185 DB/WR Donte Gilliard is the Army Iron Man of the Week presented by Jostens in the battalion’s New Jersey recruiting territory. Gilliard had eight pass-breakups, nine tackles, a 44-yard reception to set up a touchdown, and the game-winning 27-yard touchdown catch over three defenders as Long Branch beat Lacey in overtime, 34-28. Gilliard edged out South Jersey's Bryan Burnham of Moorestown by 11 votes 275-265. As a weekly winner, Gilliard is now eligible for the Army Iron Man of the Year presented by Jostens.

Playing and excelling on both offense and defense, the Army Iron Man must demonstrate physical and emotional strength, as well as strength of character. The Army Iron Man embodies the qualities of Army STRONG.

Calvin Thompson is a hypocrite. In the article regarding the Point Boro/Mon Don football game on Friday night, he is quoted as saying "we teach our kids to have some class." Before he can teach his kids this, he needs to get some himself. Rather than take a knee with seconds left in the game, he called two timeouts in order to put three more points on the board at a time when he was leading by more than three touchdowns. Mr. Thompson, you're a classless act and I'm glad you're not my son's role model.

When your ego gets in the way of doing the right thing, begin to question why you are coaching football. The Boro AD / Administration needs to have a conversation with someone about what values we want to instill in our young men. I think someone owes an apology to MonDon.

Great job by the APP sportswriter who wrote the Boro-MonDon article in the Sat. edition. Calling attention to the lack of sportsmanship is a public service. Let's hope this is a wake-up call to coaches to do the right thing when the game's outcome is not in question. Fortunately, most shore conference football coaches do the right thing week in and week out. What say you Mr. Graham about Mr. Thompson's actions?

I would say, that was not something I would have done.

I don't believe in running up the score..no matter what the reason.

who has rbc beat to be ranked that high? They play another winless team and I don't think any of the teams they played has more than one win. I just don't see how you can have an rbc and point boro ranked over some of the bigger schools. Wall lost and moved up the pole. You guys moved lb from not ranked to 4th because they beat lacey and lacey may have 3 losses by the end of next week. I just don't see how you can move teams down that won and move teams up that lost. I think your poll has lost credit this year because you guys are doing a real bad job. If lacey gets beat by brick, will you move lb down. They did not look great against a bad matawan team.

Steve Falk does our poll so perhaps he should answer this - so this is only my take.

RBC opened the preseason No. 4 and all they have done is blow people out ..granted.. they have not played a Top 10 team yet, but they will in LB and Wall...so it'll come out in the wash as they say..

LB was 10th, not unranked, when it deserved to jump ahead of then No. 4 Lacey via head-to-head victory..

Steve apparently felt Wall deserved to be racheted up after their classic with No. 1 Middletown South....as:

Lacey tumbled out of the poll, and TRN and P Boro did not distinguish themselves in their wins...

No reason I see to drop LB, Matawan is young in some areas and has some athletes..

In the`end sometimes teams can move up after losing and fall after winning.

I have done the HS Baseball Poll for years and in the past the HS football poll and such instances, while not common place, do happen.

It's all very subjective and everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Anyway....this is only my take.

How did Rbc distinguish itself? It has not played a good team all year. If your reason for moving other teams down was because they have not played anyone than RBC should have been moved down. You should let it play out before you move a team from 10-4.

LB jumped from 10 to 4 after it beat then No. 5 Lacey..RBC opened the season at No. 4.

I agree they haven't beaten anyone of note yet..that is correct..

I have a few observations regarding polls and sportsmanship, and for the record, I have no connection to TRN or Pt. Boro:

Polls are subjective, and not to be taken too seriously. However,
TRN won 35-0 and didn't run up the score on an outclassed Marlboro team. SO, in order to have "distinguished themselves" this week, I assume they would have had to tack on a few more TDs, which is unsportsmanlike according to the "Calvin Thompson" test.

What Thompson did vs. Mon Don was wrong, I agree. However, if you want another example of skewed sportsmanship, look no further than TRN's reaction to TRS breaking up a 42-0 shutout with a long field goal in the 4th quarter. TRN re-inserted every offensive starter and tossed a long TD pass to show their displeasure. Given the 42 point deficit with minutes to play, the TRS coach showed no class by simply trying to break TRN's shutout with a FG instead of a TD. AND, the TRN coach responded poorly.

To TRN & P Boro comment - OK, good point. I did not mke a good reference there..TRN blew out to a 28-0 first-quarter lead over Marlboro and then - I guess, pulled back, which is the right thing to do in my opinion...As I read the story - TRN just threw one pass in the second half...

Basically what I'm saying is -that Steve may have felt Wall's game vs. MS was worthy of moving the Knights up as opposed to TRN and P Boro wins in this instance..

A few years ago we yanked TR N down from No. 1 after a win...

In the TRN- TRS game this year..I have no problem with TRS kicking a field goal down 42-0 or whatever..they're just trying to get something - anything - positive out of the game..for TRN to go back to the attack after that - not cool in my opinion..

RFH could have used the video replay last week against Keanesburg. They thought they scored all three times from inside the one yard line on OT

Re: Rumson game. I was at the game...Rumson q back told the coach he made it in on third down but not fourth. Don't know about the first two attempts. Even standing on the field it's hard to tell in those pile ups...

Wall moved up because it was an inch away from beating the No. 1 team. Red Bank Catholic started No. 4, and it blown out every team it has played. Anybody who saw the Long Branch-Lacey game knows that was a classic game. Lacey was 2 at the time. Long Branch was 10. Long Branch won so it deserved to move way up at that point. Teams can move up or down in a poll, depending on how they play. You can win and move down if you don't play. and you can lose, play well and move up. Polls are subjective, and the only that really matters is the last one.

When teams win and you move them down in the poll, teams start to run scores up so they can make their wins look more impressive. I don't think that is right but that is what is going to happen. You can't punish a team for playing it's schedule. You knew who was on their schedule when you placed them in the poll.

I think you should not even do a poll until about week 4 or 5. That way you have a chance to let things play out. Why was RBC 4th in the pre season. Pt Boro was strong last year and they returned most of their team. Lacey lost most of their key players and you ranked them 3rd. They may not make the playoffs. Rbc has not played one good team so you must be ranking them by last years record. Not to mention that they are padding their stats and running up the score on some of the worst teams in the shoreconference.

Re: Polls not til Week 4 or 5.

While it actually makes some sense, it's never going to happen.

Preseason polls set the stage and anticipation for an entire season and hardly just in football....

Re: LB. Steve Falk saw them (vs. Lacey) and was very impressed. We think they have a legit shot at MS in a possible playoff game down the road...

Before that they have games with Wall and RBC back-to-back..

Jackson Liberty is 1-3 with mainly juniors and sophs..no seniors. beat a Wildwood team that last won a game in 1776 or there abouts...I don't know if they can win another game this year..plus they lost one of their best players - Tanner Ogilvie - to injury...

On the Phillies....a dream come true..
