Rally Round Table on line Friday/Key games/Make pre and post game comments on these and others/Barnegat-Holmdel and Brick-Lacey on RALLYCAST

Rally Round table on line Friday morning...we look at the first four games listed below...

Also: Scores and many halftime results out on the front page of our web site and scores at 1-800-822-9770, ext. 4470. Out of state call 1-800-248-2216.

Southern (3-0, 3-0) hosts No. 2
Toms River East (3-0, 2-0) in a key
American Division game.

Barnegat (3-1, 3-1), in just its
second varsity season, hopes to
leap into the thick of the National Division race with a win
at No. 9 Holmdel (3-0, 3-0).

Asbury Park (3-1, 3-1), which
hasn't captured a division
championship for quite some time would forge into the Patriot Division picture with a home
field win over Keansburg (3-0,
3-0), itself looking for its first
trophy in ages.

In other notable games, Brick
(2-1, 2-0) travels to Lacey (2-2,
2-1) with the winner remaining
in the hunt for the Constitution
Division crown. The loser, especially if it's defending South
Jersey III champion Lacey,
may find itself on the bubble
come playoff time.

And there's Manasquan (3-1) vs. Rumson (3-1).

Barnegat's D has given up 237 yards per game while Holmdel's O has gained 242 yards per game. I think Barnegat has too many options for Holmdel to key on 1 player like they did against Big Blue and SJV. Both of those teams rely heavily on the run, while Barnegat is balanced. Barnegat has big play receivers who can break it at any time. In fact, all 3 of Holmdel's opponents combined have only thrown for 24 yards more than Barnegat has. Although Fitzpatrick is out, Barnegat still has a couple of backs who can help keep Holmdel off balance. The Hornets have gained most of their yardage on the ground. I think that Barnegat's linebacking corps can contain the run game. I pick Barnegat to win 25-14
TRE vs. Southern- I look for East to pound the ball in this game. Both teams are in the top 8 defensively but this will be a test for Southern. Southern had 1 real good offensive showing last week, but they have not scored a lot of points traditionally. TRE 28-7 over Southern.
Lacey needs to come back strong after 2 losses. Brick played TRN real tough and lost a tough game. Lacey has to be balanced and throw the ball. I'm sure that Brick will pick on Lacey's secondary who has given up too many yards through the air. This is a close game but I pick Brick 28-21.
Asbury Park and Keansburg are evenly matched with close stats both offensively and defensively. I give the edge to Keansburg because they have more experience. Their win over RFH showed their intensity and I think that they win 21-14.
Manasquan vs. RFH is a tough pick. Manasquan has some injuries that my hurt them. They still have a lot of heart and they are getting better every week. They are big up front and if the backs are healthy they will score. Big Blue 27-21

I hope that all Shore Conference coaches display good sportsmanship during this weekend's games.

That would be nice if they did, but as one NFL coach said, "When do you stop playing" I can see leaving your first team D in if you have a shutout, but the coaches, especially at the high school level with a big lead, need to protect their skill players. An injury late in a one-sided game could have implications for the rest of the schedule. I personally think it is better for a team in the long run at this level to put in the second team offense. After all the younger players will gain more in the long run if they get some varsity experience. On the other hand if you're being blown out 42-0, does it mean you should put in your second team? It has been a controversy for a long time and there is no real answer to the question. But in the long run, it will always come back to haunt you. Coaches are like elephants, they never forget and what goes around comes around. You may be on top of the world one season because you have talented players who get what you teach them, but 2 years down the road it may be a different story. Building a program takes alot of talent and a lot of luck and a lot of hard work. The larger schools have a lot of bodies to pick from, the smaller schools don't. The programs before high school play an integral role in the success of the high school program. I like the idea of introducing middle school football programs into the Shore Conference. Rob Davis is reaping the benefits of introducing middle school football 5 years ago at Barnegat. All levels of his program are enjoying an outstanding year, the only blemishes against their records are a loss to Squan at the varsity level and a tie by the freshmen against Squan. 12 games produced 10 victories, 1 loss and 1 tie. Not bad for a program that is in its infancy. It is a definite sign that the program is just getting started and will become a dynasty. Barnegat along with Southern and Pinelands were the pioneers in Ocean County but more schools are joining the bandwagon. The TR school system became involved last year but many schools are hampered by the local Pop Warner programs. The Cape-Atlantic League had the right idea by grouping the players by grade level and not by weight as is the policy of Pop Warner. That is the future of youth football and it will bring results in a short period of time. Barnegat is the prime example of this.
Good Luck tonight Bengals!
