Last year, Middletown North temporarily delayed the Patriots Shore Conference Class A Noth public division championship celebration.

Monday, Freehold Township knocked the Lions out of first place in the division with an 8-2 victory.

""That (Middletown North delaying Freehold Township's title celebration) was in the back of our minds,'' said Freehold Township coach Frank Gualtieri said.

The Lions (8-6, 8-3) trail Colts Neck (10-3, 8-2) and Christian Brothers Academy (10-3, 9-3) by a half game. They play at CBA Thursday and also have a game Friday at Colts Neck. Colts Neck plays at CBA Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the win was vital for Freehold Township (6-6, 5-6) as far as making both the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV and Shore Conference tournaments goes. Teams must have at least a .500 record by the conclusion of play on May 11 to qualify for the state tourmament and must be at least .500 by the end of play on the afternoon of May 14 to qualify for the SCT.

""We would have been behind the eight ball if we didn't win (Monday),'' Gualtieri said. ""Now, our fate is in hands. If we play the we're capable of playing, good things will happen.''
