SJ Vianney stuns No. 5 RBC, NO. 4 TR East rallies to down Brick Memorial/ Monday scores/ postponement/updates
St. John Vianney High School first-year varsity baseball coach Mike Morgan said his team was anxious to make amends for dropping two games to Red Bank Catholic last year.
""It was between us and them for the (2006 Class A Central overall) championship and they handled us both times,'' said Morgan.
But Monday the Lancers turned the tables coming from behind to down the No. 5 Caseys 4-2 in the season-opener for both teams, led by two clutch RBI hits by senior Nick Scarillo.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth Chris Lewnes doubled and scored on a Scarillo single and Chris Ruffler scored on a double by Andrew Archer. Scarillo singled home an insurance run in the sixth.
Nick Romano had a two-run double for RBC in the first inning.
Paul Bacigalupi went the distance for St. John striking out five.
""You want to get out to a good start by getting a win and it just so happened that you get to play the team ranked fifth in the Shore and it's a big game in the division,'' Morgan said.
RBC coach Tony Martinez said he did not start hard throwing J.C. Menna (7-1 last year) because Menna is being used this season as a closer.
TOMS RIVER EAST 7, BRICK MEMORIAL 6:Brady Doyle had an RBI single when the No. 4 Raiders (1-0, 1-0) tied the score with three runs in the bottom of the seventh and Sean Gavin doubled and scored the winning run on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning of the Class A South victory over the Mustangs (0-1, 0-1).
Brian Staub had three hits for Memorial including a double in the seventh when Memorial scored twice to mount a 6-3 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh Frank DeHart hit a sacrifice fly and Ryan Dolan tied the score with a bases-loaded ground out.
Joe Somma had three hits, walked twice, stole two bases, and scored three runs for TR East.
POINT BORO 15, PINELANDS 6: James Simon had four hits, drove in three runs and scored twice, and Jim Squillante had two triples, drove in three runs, and scored four to lead the Panthers (1-0, 1-0) to a Class B South win over the Wildcats (0-1, 0-1).
Pete Chomiak hit a two-run home run and Pat Biserta went 0-1 with four walks for Point Boro.
Shawn Franklin had three doubles and three runs scored for Pinelands.

RARITAN 11, LONG BRANCH 1:Devin Noonan doubled, tripled, drove in four runs and scored twice as the No. 5 Rockets (1-0) defeated the Green Wave (0-1) in a nondivision game. Chris Clayton scored three runs and winning pitcher Ed Martin struck out four over four innings. Brian Gough had an RBI doube for Long Branch.
JACKSON 3, LACEY 2:Winning pitcher Sean Stimpfel singled home Don Murphy with the tie-breaking run with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to lift the Jaguars (1-0) to a non-division win over the Lions (0-1).
Lacey tied the game with a third-innign run when Mike Mittons tripled and scored on a passed ball. Gary Gatyas homered for Lacey in the first inning.
Stimpfel struck out five over six innings with Joe Marchitelli earning the save.
MANCHESTER 4, LACEY 3:Ryan Casey singled to center scoring Brian Egan with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Hawks (1-0, 1-0) to a Class B South win over the Bengals (0-1, 0-1).
Manchester tied the score on an RBI round out by Brian Vogel in the sixth.
Brian Calabria;'s RBI double in the fith inning gave Barneget a 3-2 lead in its first divisional game.
Anthony Palmiotto allowed one earned run in seven innings to gain the victory.
FREEHOLD TWP. 4, HOWELL 0: John Whitley fanned 11 Rebels hitters and scattered four hits en route to a complete game shut out victory to open the Patriots' season. Chase Majewski went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI in support of Whitley, including a two-run double in the fourth. Rodger Wilmot led off the sixth with a solo home run for Freehold Township>
WALL 3, MATAWAN 1: Matt Logan ripped the go-ahead two-run double in the top of the fifth inning and Kyle McCardale tossed 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to preserve a Crimson Knights win over the Huskies. Starter Brandon Miles earned the win with 4 1/3 innings of work, but left after Matawan loaded the bases in the fourth with one out. McCardale came on and recorded a strikeout and a pop out to end the threat. Nick Chonko drove in the lone Matawan run with a single in the third.
ST. ROSE 11, MATER DEI 1: Louisiana State University-bound right-hander Anthony Ranaudo struck out 11, belted a grand slam in the second inning and was 2-for-3 with five RBI as the No. 6 Purple Roses (1-0, 1-0) defeated the Seraphs (0-1, 0-1) in a Class B Central game.
Ranaudo allowed just two hits, none after the first inning.
Chris Bresnahan was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and Casey Cannon had a two-run double for St. Rose.
TR SOUTH 5, TR NORTH 0: Joe Talerico had a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate, including a two-run double in support of sophomore starter Tyler Gebler, as the No. 3 Indians opened with a win over the Mariners.
Mark Perry and Ryan Kapp drove in a run each with back-to-back singles in the top of the fourth to give South a 2-0 lead. Talerico followed with his two-run double in the next inning.
Gebler scattered seven hits and struck out six and walked nine in picking up the complete game shut out.
Toms River North loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but Gebler escaped one last jam to finish the job.
BRICK 5, SOUTHERN 2: F.J. Lucchetti went 2-for-3 with two RBI and scored two runs and Phil Corde was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as the Green Dragons (1-0, 1-0) defeated the Rams (0-1, 0-1) in a Class A South game.
Chris Sorice (five inningss), Mike Winters (one inning) and Bobby Mattliano (one inning) combined on a five-hitter.
Andrew Schmidt was 2-for-3 for Southern.

GREEN COUNTY ARK. 4, COLTS NECK 3 Dom Hayes went 2-for-3 with two RBI and struck out five in two innings of relief on the mound, but the Cougars (0-1) lost their season-opener Sunday night to the Green Hornets in Orlando, Fla. on a two-out, two-run throwing error in the top of the seventh.
Cougars' starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani struck out nine and allowed one run on five hits over the first five innings and Pete Salvati went 2-for-3.
