Kyle Slate has been mowing down opponents all year for Christian Brothers Academy, so Tuesday's solid two-hit performance against Red Bank Catholic didn't come as a surprise.
Slate, now 8-0, had 13 strikeouts and didn't walk a batter as the Colts won the quarterfinal game in the Monmouth County Tournament, 4-0.
""It was as good as he's thrown all year,'' said CBA coach Marty Kenney.""His fastball was in the upper 80s and his split-finger was unhittable.''
None of that is unusual, including the control by Slate.
""He is always around home plate. He's walked five batters in 49 innings this year,'' said Kenney. In all, the senior only threw 80 pitches.
Slate has signed to go to the University of Maine but pro scouts have been looking at him in recent weeks.
""There have been four and five scouts at every outing lately,'' said Kenney.
The Colts, now 17-4, got the only run they needed in the first inning when Steve McSherry scored on the back end of a double steal with Dave Laufer.
""They had two strikes on Jim (Laufer),so I thought I'd try and make something happen,'' said Kenney.
RBC starter J.C. Menna was nearly as tough as Slate, holding CBA off the board until the sixth inning.
""Menna was great today too,'' said Kenney.""He was more of a thrower last year. Now, he's a pitcher.''
The Colts finally got to Menna in the sixth when Jim Laufer blasted a three-run home run to put the game out of reach for the Caseys (13-9).
CBA will play Shore Regional in the semifinals, perhaps on Saturday.
JACKSON 7, LAKEWOOD 1: Carl Stockert allowed only three hits, and Cory Carr's bases-clearing, three-run triple in the fifth inning broke the game open for the Jaguars.
Stockert had 10 strikeouts in his six innings of work for the Jags who are now 16-6. Stockert is now 2-1 for the season.
NEPTUNE 13, KEANSBURG 9: Bryan Toohey had a three-run home run to spark a five-run fifth inning as the Fliers moved above the .500 mark.
Toohey had three hits, scored three runs and drove home five for Neptune, now 11-10, as Brendan Roddy won his first game. Joe Mickle had three hits for the Titans and scored twice.
RARITAN 13, MIDD SOUTH 0: Charlie Rivera had seven strikeouts inn five innings of work to pickup his third win of the season and added a two-run home run in the first inning.
Kevin York had three hits, two home runs and six RBI for the Rockets, who are now 11-8.
FREEHOLD 16, RED BANK 3: Jeff Frost had three hits and four RBI while James Frost scored three runs and drove in three for the Colonials, who improved to 8-10.

at the game yesterday; slate and renaldo from st rose are leagues above any other pitchers at the shore. slate was unhittable, poised and two or three levels above rbc's pitcher
