Draft over. : Local MLB draftees: Ranaudo, Principe, Slate, Menna

Name Round No. Team
Todd Frazier (TR South, Rutgers 2 34 Reds (please see today's Press for story).

Anthony Ranaudo (St. Rose) 11 350 Texas

Jimmy Principe (TR East, Brookdale) 37 1116 Arizona

Kyle Slate (CBA) 37 1126 Philadelphia (Frankly, I'd rather have him pitching tonight than Freddie Garcia)

J.C. (Gerald) Menna) 39 1167 Pittsburgh

Below about Ranaudo from mlb.com

Comments
Fastball:
Ranaudo throws his fastball in the 87-92 mph range. His comfort zone grades out as an average pitch.
Fastball movement:
Ranaudo does not have much life or movement on his fastball.
Curve:
Right now, Ranaudo throws a below-average curve, but it projects to be an average offering. He throws it now in the 72-75 mph range.
Changeup:
Ranaudo does throw a changeup at 77-79 mph, but it's in its infancy stages and he doesn't throw it that much.
Control:
His command is currently below-average.
Poise:
He's got average aggressiveness on the mound, but is fairly agile and has good aptitude.
Physical Description:
Ranaudo is a big right-hander who has a Jason Hirsh-like body type.
Medical Update:
Healthy.
Strengths:
Arm strength and big body along with all the projections that come along with it.
Weaknesses:
He's really only got one pitch right now and two that might eventually become Major League average. His delivery can get mechanical at times.
Summary:
Ranaudo hasn't pitched all that much and it shows. He's got a big body that has many scouts dreaming of projection, but there's not as much "now" to him past his fastball. His secondary pitches have a chance but are below-average currently. Someone will take a chance on him and hope they can harness the potential in a very large frame and help him meet those projections.

if renauldo's only going in the eleventh round it's clear that the talk of the other shore players potentially getting drafted was overstated

Right now I'm into round 37 and Ranaudo the Lone Shore (Texas) Ranger (or any other team) so far....

I can only go by what scouts tell me ..and those comments are always at least a few days to longer before the draft and things change...

I am surprised Biserta was not drafted yet..anyway..BUT I heard the alleged number figure he was looking for and he would have had to be drafted real high for him to have a shot at that number...

Also.. as scouts say..kids committed to four-year schools prob won't sign unless they're drafted reasonably early. But I would not rule out Ranaudo not signing..

do you think weinkofsky hurt his draft stock with his change of mind on college..does that indecision deter potential teams draft ideas?

Re: Weinkofsky. One would think his changing of mind and going to JC would have enhanced his draft status.....

As you say..scouts attended many of his games..hey..a scout I talked to in preseason said he was - if I can recall - like a near definite to be drafted.

In the end I think going to Brookdale and having a very good year or two will benefit him as a player, and his draft status in the long run.

The draft is a crap shoot at best with the ever changing landscape of college BB. Kids that are solid in a 4yr college committment can and are usually drafted in the hopes (by a MLB team) that they can be persuaded to sign for slot $$ in a later round, BUT if a kid is taken after the 15th or so round they are no more than roster fillers in the low minors with a low chance to move up the chain in that organization. For Slate, Menna or any of the undrafted kids to sign in the late rounds would be a big mistake for a HS player. If you're a college graduating senior and catch a 45 round draft you go for it but for an 18 yr old kid with options, go to that 4yr or JuCo, advance your skills and advance your draft possibilities. As for Winkofsky I agree with the decision to opt out of his 4 yr committment for JuCo. He needs some work on his "D", he will certainly advance his skills there with Jon Johnson and he will continue to hit like no tomorrow drawing scouts to BCC the next 2 springs.

To last poster - well said, my sentiments exactly.

Brookdale baseball is always a fun team to watch, JJ does a great job, and tons of local kids abound.

Like Monmouth, it's a shame we can't get out to cover more of their games....sigh.

Ranaudo was offered what I would consider a "tidy sum" by the Brewers if he would sign in round three...but - in my opinion - the family's "advisor" scewed it up. I guess it wasn't just my opinion. The advisor was then fired.
