Hughes shuts down No. 1 Spartans
rdup: WALL 3, OCEAN 1: Senior right-hander Chris Hughes fired a two-hitter and Dan Camanao drove in the go-ahead with a single in the third inning as the unranked Crimson Knights (2-0, 2-0) upended the No. 1 Spartans (1-1, 0-1) in a Class B North game.
Ocean loaded the bases in the fifth inning, but Hughes, who struck out five and walked six, got a ground out to end the inning. The Spartans also threatened in the sixth when they put a runner on third with one out. But Hughes and Camanad, the catcher, combined for a key play as Ocean tried to throw the tying run on a pitch that went to the backstop. Hughes raced to the plate and caught Camanao's throw and applied the tag for the putout. He then got a strikeout to end the inning.
"It was an outstanding effort by Chris,'' said Wall coach Todd Schmitt. "He wanted the ball and gave us exactly what we expected.''
Matt Logan went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the seventh and Andrew Otterberg had a run-scoring single in the first for Wall.
Ocean's slugging catcher Keith Weinkofsky went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the first.
