Toohey/Neptune infield halt Lakewood

NEPTUNE - The defense never rested Monday for the Neptune High School baseball team.
""Our defense is going to be solid all year,'' said senior pitcher Brian Toohey after the Scarlet Fliers second double play of the afternoon completed a 4-2 nondivision opening-day victory over Lakewood.
""We have mainly all seniors in the infield so that helps out with the experience,'' said Toohey, a lanky left-hander.
The lone sophomore in the infield, shortstop Tyler Torres, was the middle man in the seventh inning double play and, after he booted a ground ball in the fourth, started an inning-ending 6-4-3 twin killing.
Toohey yielded just one hit after the second inning, a one-out single in the seventh by Mike Muth.
""Today I still didn't have my good stuff,''said Toohey. A four-game winner last year, Toohey struck out five and walked two. ""I battled through it and we came out with the win,'' he said.
Neptune scratched out the tie-breaking runs in the sixth inning. Toohey scored on a bases-loaded throwing error and another run crossed on a Tim Kortenhaus infield out.
""This is a game we don't win last year,'' said seventh-year Neptune coach Bob Huzzy. ""We wouldn't have come together as a team to pull this one off.
""We didn't win it like I'd like to win it, but good teams win games like this.''
""That's high school baseball, you've got to make the plays when things get tough,'' said Gene Drumwright, Lakewood coach. His team committed four errors, two in the sixth inning.
""I thought both teams were evenly matched,'' he said. ""It was a good game and then all of as sudden we had a break down in the sixth inning and that cost us the game.
""I thought it was an outstanding job by their left-hander. He was still throwing pretty hard in the seventh inning.
""Take your thats off to them, they made two nice double plays, and we had guys that could run. They outplayed us today.''
Neptune hopes to make some noise in a stacked Class B North division of the Shore Conference that features No. 1 Ocean as well as the likes of Wall, Monmouth Regional, and Freehold.
""Our next game is Wall so we'll be ready,''said Toohey. "'Chris Ace is our next pitcher. We played awesome against them last year and lost by one run. It's going to be a good game.''
Torres and Chris Sibole had two hits for Neptune and Muth two for Lakewood including an RBI single in the second inning.
