Poll on Friday's Rumson-RBC game

Wow:

The poll participation here has shattered any records on any Press poll blogs I know of for at least such a short period of time.

There seems to be a sentiment here from some people that maybe RBC should have pulled its starters sooner than it did. I have attempted to set the poll that supposedly one person may not vote more than once, but I am not certain that part is working.....

RBC WOULD'VE BEEN CORRECT IN WHATEVER THEY WANTED TO DO...BECAUSE RUMSON COULD'VE PLAYED THEIR STARTERS...IT PROBABLY WOULD'VE BEEN A CLOSE GAME ANYWAY...IT WAS RBC LAST GAME...WHY SHOULD THEY MAKE THEIR SENIORS OR STARTERS SUFFER CAUSE OF RUMSON COWARDNESS.

Wow. I suppose this is the reason that people can cite against the Thanksgiving rivalry games (only if your team makes the finals). I get why you rest starters to avoid injury before a big game, but I do not remember the last time I saw a sectional finalist lose 61-0.

All I know is Coach Fallon better make sure his team wins or puts up a big effort in the finals, because I know a number of Rumson residents that were pretty close to wanting blood when I spoke to them last night.

Man Rumson better beat Carteret..They gonna have their starters rested and healthy..If they don't win, they did what they did for nothing and Rumson Seniors and atarters missed out on a game they wished they played in.

Coach Edgerly...you should've put up 100. Fallon is a coward!!Toms River North is the finals, Asbury Park and Keansburg are in the finals, they played their starters like a regular game. This is something your players will remember after they have graduated...and it won't be remembered fondly. You had BETTER win the states after pulling that act of cowardice.

As a former player on a championship Rumson-Fair Haven football team in 1963, as a father watching my three sons play for RFH, and as a spectator who has followed football for over 50 years, I find the actions of the RFH administration, the superintendent, the athletic director, and the Head Coach to be deplorable. If RFH did not want to play the game, they should have forfeited to RBC. To expose their younger players to this humiliation and, more importantly, to the possibility of severe injury, is not the decision that I would expect. RBC is a good football team and that fact is proven by their record. I attended the game last night. RFH coach Fallon did not have his team ready to play. It was like watching a Pop Warner Team play against a high school team. The risk of injury to the underclassmen at RFH was an irresponsible decision made by everyone who endorsed this fiasco. I am a proud alumnus of the school, but this decision to throw the game and jeopardize the players' health is unprecedented in high school football. I live in Middletown, and with all the state championships that they have won, I have never seen them sit their starters on Thanksgiving. What ever happened to the traditions of the game? I understand that this decision to rest the seniors was made on Monday. If they were that injured from the Holmdel game, then the RBC game should have been canceled. In the interest of good sportsmanship, it is the job of the head coach to get his team prepared to play. It was quite obvious that the RFH second string team was not adequately prepared. Unfortunately, it tainted a very good performance by the RBC team. It appeared that RFH was afraid of RBC, and they chose the cowardly escape route. I feel sorry for the RFH parents (especially the senior parents) for having to witness their sons obey a head coach whose priorities were misdirected. In the spirit of good sportsmanship, which I find RFH sorely lacks, the RFH administration and football staff owe an apology to the fans, parents, townspeople, and students for tarnishing a tradition of gridiron competition that has prevailed for over 50 years. By the way, I admire those underclass players who risked serious injury and endured humiliation from RBC. Have we lost sight of what is important? Based on their actions, the message sent by the coaching staff is that it is acceptable for the underclassmen to be injured, but not acceptable for the seniors. This kind of coaching conduct would never have happened under my coach, Joe Rosati. How I yearn for the old days--when it meant something to play and beat RBC.

If the coach at my high school did what the rumson coach did, he would be fired on the spot. If it's on the schedule, it's the coach's job to try and win the game, not to determine its importance. A sectional football title is like a district wrestling title ... two rounds short of a state title.

Both coaches made decisions that were not necessariuly popular. The RFH coach made a decision that was not popular with his fans. The RBC coach had no problem running up the score. Had no Problem blitzing one or two linebackers EVERY play after they were winning by 30, after they were winning by 40 and after they were winning by 50. Although many in the actiual poll agree with the bloggers, it is cleatr that the RBC coach is no Saint. By his play calling, he had every intent to try and score as much as possible and try and hurt the undermanned RFH team. Fallon's decsion was not popular, but the RBC reaction to the decision was equally pathetic. To say someone should be fired over an unpopular decision is ridiculous. Next year stay home in your warm house in Middletown and let us watch the game as true fans.
