Class A South complete/full predicted order of finish in Saturday Rally

My pick - TOMS RIVER SOUTH.
2007 Class A South

Listed alphabetically
Brick
Coach: Jason Groschel, 2nd year.
Record last year: 12-11 (5-7, A South).
Key returnees: F.J. Luchetti (Sr., P/1B, .325, 3 HR, 7-3, 1.47 ERA. John Vitale (Sr.,
RF, .250); Anthony Nardone (Sr., CF); Mike Gasior (Sr., C, .385); Phil
Corde (Sr., 3B). Key newcomers: Bobby Mattliano (Sr., P/INF); Andrew Lombardo (Sr., LF); Chris Simon (Jr., INF); Ray Johnson, (Jr. 1B); Jared Page (Jr., C); Travis Escalante (Jr., 2B); Chris Sorice (Jr., P/3B).

My outlook: Luchetti provides the Dragons an ace. Need to fill in with some pitching depth and have some young hitters develop to agument Gasior.

Brick Memorial
Coach: Rich Bishop, 1st year.
Record last year: 15-10 (6-6, A South).
Key returnees: Kyle Heilbraun (Sr., OF, .450); Jason Gordon (Sr., P, 2B, .366, 4-1,
2.10 ERA); Joe Piezzo (Sr., P, 4-0, 2.70 ERA). Key newcomers: Mike Spienlli (So., OF);
Brian Staub (So., INF); Tom Lawler (Sr., SS); Evan Mancini (Jr., P/INF); Tom Murray
(Sr., C).

My outlook: Two pitchers with a combined total of eight wins is a good jumping off
point for any team. If the Mustangs find some bats they could be troublesome.

Jackson
Coach: Frank Malta (89-79, 8th year overall, 3rd at Jackson)
Last year: 11-13 (3-9 A South)

Key returners: Sean Stimpfel (Sr., P, 6-5); Carl Stockert (Sr., P, 3-3); Carl Lofaso (Sr., 1B, 5 HR); Joe Marchitelli (Sr., P); Ryan Guarino (Sr., 3B); Donald Murphy (Jr., CF); Andrew Brodzinski (Sr., OF); Paul Alvear (Jr., P); Joe Fenster (Sr., OF); Bill Lee (Sr., C); Ivan Cartagena (Sr., OF); Brendan Stilwell (So., P, SS); Kevin Needham (So., P, C). Key newcomers: Joe Aberno (1B); Cory Carr (3B); Dave Ricci (P); P.J. Adams (SS); Jon Koslewski (LF), Pete Kelich (SS/2B).

An overall experienced team including some good arms. May surprise.

Lacey

Coach: Keith Tyhanic (28-28, fourth year overall, second at Lacey)

Last year (12-12, 8-4 B South)
Key returners: Gerry Gatyas (Sr., INF/P, .292, 1-2)); Mike Mitton (Sr., OF, .270);
Tom Larney (Sr. OF); Ed Trapper (Sr. P, 1-3); Tim Smith (Sr. P). Key newcomers: Zack
Pierce: (Jr. C); Chris Brendel (Sr. 2B/P); Sean McAndrew (Sr., P); Matt Guzzo (Sr., P);
Sean Dochney (Sr. 1B); Joe Phipp (Sr. P); Dominic Rizzolo (Soph. P).

My outlook: It's welcome to the big time for the 2006 Ocean County Tournament
finalists who make thejump from Class B South to A South minus graduated ace and
six-game winner Todd Roth.

Southern
Coach: Dennis Pidgeon, 1st year.
Record last year: 11-14 (5-7 A South).
Key returnees: Bill Hauer (Sr., P, 2-2, 2.43 ERA)); Devon Cucuzza (Sr., P, INF, .305,
HR, 0-2); Dennis Mitchell (Sr., 1B, .322, 16 RBI); Rob Tampone (Sr., 2B/OF. .303, HR);
Shawn O'Grady (Sr., P/OF); Mike Garofalo (Sr. 1B); Andre Schmidt (Jr., C/OF, .237, HR).
Key newcomers: Tim Moffitt (Jr., SS); Shayne Junger (Jr., P/3B); Eric Strom (Jr.,
C/OF).

My outlook: Some mound and infield experience is a plus. JV went 15-10 as Moffit,
Strong, and Junger all batted over .400. Rams made some noise at times last year and
could this year again, but division is a mine field.

TOMS RIVER EAST

Coach: Bill Frank 23rd year (412-189- 2)
Last year: 24-7 (9-3 A South)
Key returnees: Bryan Frank (Sr., P/1B, 1-1, 2.33 ERA; Brady Doyle (Sr., CF, 305); Sean Gavin (Sr. 2B, .389, 4 HR, 20 RBI); Joe Somma (Sr. RF, .423); Pete Dacenko (Sr., C); Frank DeHart (Sr. LF). Key newcomers: Ryan Dolan (Jr., SS,); Frank Aitoro (Sr. P/3B,); John Lightbody (Sr., P/OF); Steve Fereno (Jr., P); Pete Fitzsimmons (Jr., P); Steve Pappalardo (So., P); Chris Wedding (Jr., P/3B); Brad Stockton (Sr., OF); Jeff Hudak (Jr.); Jude Baldacini (So.); Pete McKay (So.); John Smicklo (Jr.)

My outlook: Some lively bats but, for the first time in a while, no proven pitching with which to pursue a seventh consecutive division championship. Still among the elite at the Shore.

Toms River North
Coach: Ted Schelmay (14th year, 214-125)
Last year: 12-12 (5-7 A South)
Key returners: Chad Geran (Sr., P/2B, .250, 6-3); Anthony Scorsone (Sr., P/1B, 1-2); Zach Brebner (Jr., P, 0-2, 1.94 ERA); Mike LaCava (Sr., OF, .387, 3 HR, 24 RBI); Anthony Mazzetta (Sr., 3B, OF, .270); Scott Shan (Jr., 3B, OF); Paul DeMartino (Jr., SS, .270). Key newcomers: Mike Conrad (Sr., P); Dom Lorusso (Sr., P); Steve Nyisztor (So., P); Bill Hoermann (So., P/1B); Matt Mancini (Jr., C); Mark Leiter (So., P).

My outlook: Mariners slipped a little last year, but should bounce back behind a Geran-led staff while LaCava leads a quality lineup.

Toms River South
Coach: Ken Frank (30th year, 638-204-3)
Last year: 23-7 (9-3 A South)

Key returnees: Mark Potter (Sr., P, 4-1, 3.19 ERA); Joe Talerico (Sr., CF/P, .404, 9
HR, 2-2); Ryan Kapp (Jr., C/OF, DH, .413, 5 HR, 17 RBI); Mark Perry (Sr., 1B, .400);
Chase Gray (Jr., 2B, .378, 4 HR, 22 RBI); Tyler Gebler (So. SS/P, .269, HR, 20 RBI,
4-2). Key newcomers: Ron Roma (Sr., INF); Vincent Vivona (Jr., P/DH); Jake DelVento (Jr., P/INF); John Coppinger (Jr., P/INF); Nick Roma (Jr., OF); Kevin Bellevance (Jr., OF); Brian Crashewsky (Jr., P/OF); Anthony Penna (Jr., 3B/SS); Kevin Gilmore (So., P/INF); Dan Davis (So., P/1B); Kevin Knowles (So., P/INF); Jeff Bissey (Jr., P/INF/DH).

My outlook: Maybe an upper echelon South club (compared to merely
very good ones) to take the field in a while with pitching and power and Gebler as a young
Todd Frazier in waiting. Frank, the the winningest active high school baseball
coach in NJ, needs 12 wins for 650.

As he is a potential newcomer I personally would not think he is No. 2 with the likes of Potter, Talerico, and Gebler all returning. Far as I know he is still on the team but we don't have space (in the paper anyway) to list every player. I really don't know his status but I'll put him back on the blog. Not sure why - if he was there to begin with - I took him off.
