No. 1 CBA 3, No. 8 Midd.North 0. Press story

MIDDLETOWN - Even after he retired the first 12 Middletown North batters Wednesday
CBA senior Kyle Slate said the fact the Shore Conference Class A North game was
scoreless had him concerned.

""In the back of my mind it was, ""Are we going to get any runs?'' said Slate.

CBA did. The No. 1 Colts (4-2, 4-2) broke up a pitcher's duel when they reached
North senior Kevin Engelbrecht for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to halt
the No. 8 Lions, 3-0, and end a rare two-game losing streak.

Slate, who no-hit Freehold Township opening day and has yet to allow a run this
season, wasn't rattled when the Lions (5-2, 5-1), seeking their first win over CBA
since 2002, broke up his perfect game.

Sean Byrnes beat out an infield roller to begin the fifth inning and Jim Trancucci
singled to left.

""I figured now is the time to really get to work and shut them down,'' said Slate
who has signed with the University of Maine.

"'Usually when guys get on base that's when some pitchers self destruct,'' said the
right-hander. ""But I go at it like, this is the time where I'm either going to lose
the game or take control of the game.''

Slate took control retiring the side on a popped up bunt attempt, a strikeout, and a
comebacker.

He finished with a four-hitter and struck out seven.

Engelbrecht, a senior right-hander pitched well enough to win most games. But in the
seventh after a Mike Galeotafiore double and a one-out intentional walk, Scott Micallef
singled off the glove of diving shortstop Kevin Majer to give CBA the lead.

""It's kind of like motivation,'' said Micallef, a senior rightfielder, of the
intentional walk preceding his at bat. ""It's kind of an insult. You've got to take that
to heart and use it for good and for your team.''

Henry Rinkewich then lined an RBI single and Anthony Cirillo lifted s sacrifice fly.

""Kyle was telling us, "Just get me one (run),'' said Micallef.

Words of ""We're still in the driver's seat,'' were audible in the North dugout
after the game.

Despite the defeat the Lions are tied for first place in the loss column with Colts
Neck.

""Are we disappointed in the loss? Yes,'' said Jon Scala, North coach. ""Are we
disappointed the way we played? Absolutely not.

""We're going to see these guys again. I'm sure it's going to be a battle again.''

Just getting to the blog now.

Very well played game. Two good teams. What was very impressive was no walks and no errors. When do you see that in a high school game?

Heck, any game.
