Unless this storms blows out to sea, it appears that no games will be played for the next 2 and maybe 3 days. So I pose a few questions to you Tony
1) Who is the new #1 team in the Shore? My guess would be Toms River North, but who should be 2,3,4. How far does CBA drop?
2 Do you feel that pariety has become part of the Shore Conference? You see alot of it professional sports and even now in the NCAA. It seems as though there are no dominate teams left. I'm not just talking baseball here either. With a few exceptions, it seems like all the sports have become this way. Agree or Disagree
3. With the season only being two weeks old, who are your biggest surprises
Great minds must think alike..well, yours anyway.
I was thinking of commenting on this very topic...or at least of reviewing this unpredictable season thus far ..
Let's look at this quickly....If there was a No. 1 daily poll..TRN would be vaulting to the top....but lots can still happen between now and late next week...
Parity? Yes. Or did some teams (CBA?) just have a rough week???
..Wall would probably be moving up..Knights have been getting very good pitching ..then Midd N. would be spiraling upwards followed by a group of CBA, TRE, and TR South...in my opinion...there are some major surprises..Barnegat and Rumson leap to mind ..
Latest surprise was Holmdel over RBC...
It seems as if only a few teams have shown the capability of
of going on major runs...
I believe Ocean will hit..there are just too many bats in that lineup.
Now watch Long Branch complete the rest of the season undefeated!
Tony, What are the biggest surprises so far on the negative side and why obviously Ocean and Point Boro, I guess Midd South also, what are your thoughts?
I think its great to see all these "upsets" so early, very possible champ of A South could have 3-4 losses, so that means almost everyone is still in it.
I agree Ocean's line up just to good not to score runs, but better in next week or its to late.
Looks like it will come down to which coach can handle his pitching staff the best, and those teams will come out on top.
Re: negative surprises. Am not going to belabor those points. After all, these are high school teams.
Suffice to say some teams have not done as well as anticipated...so far. Maybe I (we) misjudged the talent level?
Usually pitching a contributing factor as well as in some cases - injuries ..BUT remember..it's still relatively early.
The A-South title is really up for grabs, its just scary to see six teams in the mix... probably one of the toughest divisions in the Shore and even the state. I dont know if 4 losses in the division is going to give you the title though... I still believe Toms River South puts a streak together and pulls away from the rest of the pack come May.
As far the teams not playing up to expectations, as of right now you would have to include Ocean Twp and Pt. Boro in that group. Not saying they are bad teams, just off to slow starts.
I think the biggest surprise right now has to be either Jackson or Barnegat playing so well. I dont think many gave Jackson a chance in A-South this year, however Stockart has been pitching really well for them. Its great to see the Bengals doing so well in B-South, it seems as though the kids have really bought into the system that Surturis brought from Toms River South.
Hey Tony, when we will see the stats in the Rally section? All this preseason talk about the Ocean catcher, Pat "The Beast" Biserta, and Joe "Guido" Talerico... and I think they have combined for 1 HR so far this season (off the bat of Biserta) I think Talerico has to be near the top in the Shore with triples, 3 or 4 already. Are these kids off to slow start or are pitchers avoiding them?
Very nice job by last poster. I would have agreed that TR Souh comes back and wins A South had not TR North swept TR East. That gives them a leg up I would think in the title chase. Some of their younger players have really blossomed.
The baseball stats run this Saturday (we hope!)
Though there has been some hitting, this weather is not conducive to the bats.
I hear there has been some talk at P Boro about moving Biserta to the lead off spot. Panthers have been struggling, but with that swing he'll have some nice numebrs when all is said and done.
Weinkofsky didn't get hot last year until late April-May and - it says here - he will again.
Thanks for the stat update Tony, will you also be posting them on your blog like you do with scores?
Currie will have to do something in get the Panthers rolling. They were a 20 win plus program last year... and they already find themselves 2 games behind the leaders in B-South. Moving Pat to the leadoff spot may help him individually with offensive numbers, but his team has to really pick up the slack behind him.
A big week of baseball for many teams... it should be interesting to see how things play out with the weather... What will more interesting is to see how teams such as Ocean Twp, CBA and Toms River East bounce back from rough weeks.
Re stats: Doubt if I will put them on the blog because of the space they take up..but..I will take a look at it..haven't ever tried it, so we'll see.
There are some big games this week that will def. impact some races.
One game we haven't talked too much about is Midd. North vs. CBA Wednesday.
I can look this up, but I think Herbert Hoover was president the last time a public school finished in first place in A North.
In four of P. Boro's five games they have allowed six or more runs...
Last year's lineup with Tom Heuer and Biserta was better equipped to win high scoring games...
I heard Midd South is rescheduled to play Howell next Tuesday at 3:45. Next weeks is now a 6 game week for Midd. South. Also, it says on their web site schedule they will play a home double header Wednesday. Colts Neck at 3:45 and then Keansberg in the first round of the MCT at 7:30. Alot of games coming up for the Eagles. Hopefully they can turn it around. Your thoughts, Tony?
Re: Midd. South - I hope they have a lot of pitching! Then again, many teams will be in a similar boat.
Pitching - Nigel Combs especially - has seemed to be at least adequate. Seton Hall signee Dudzinski has not been dominant - - yet - for whatever reason.
But Eagles..with several experienced bats in the lineup..have not been rocking the ball.
Three of the five defeats have been 5-1, 2-1, 4-1. And in the CBA 9-6 defeat they had one run until the seventh.
Traditionally South had always hit.
With all these games it's a chance to revive the record in a hurry....but they could also be buried by the time the week is over.
Dudzinski's been pretty good, just nobodys really heard about it because of no wins but he releaved Pat Magnotta vs Midd North for 2 scoreless innings. Then had the 3 earned run, 11 K game vs CBA. And then shutout Marlboro for 6 innings. Again, not really known because of the 0 in the win column.
If he and Combs (and others) continue to pitch well it's not too late to get this thing turned around...
Herbert Hoover? Wasn't Bill Clinton President in 1999 when Middletown South won the A North, The Monmouth County Tournament and The Shore Conference Tournament, then lost to Demarest in the State Championship
Re: Herbert Hoover. Oops.. CBA did win when he was president.
I was purposely exaggerating but
but good job by you and nice post.
Still even going back to 1999 - ...it's been a lonnngg time.
