MARINERS SAIL INTO A SOUTH PICTURE

The Toms River North High School baseball team Wednesday threw its hat into the crowded Shore Conference Class A South ring.

Scott Shan's two-run home run capped a three-run fourth inning and gave the unranked Mariners (3-1, 3-1) the lead for good as they knocked off the Raiders (3-1, 3-1), No. 3 in the Asbury Park Press Top 10 Poll, 4-3 in a Class A South game.
""It was a left field shot over the scoreboard and ignited us and gave us the lead we needed (4-2) to finish the ball game,'' said Ted Schelmay, TR North coach. ""Scott Shan is a big, strong, junior and can hit with power.'"

The result left Toms River North, Toms River East, and surging Jackson (5-1, 3-1) in a three-way tie for the Class A South lead.
""We're happy with the win against Toms River East,'' said Schelmay. ""But there's a still a lot of A south baseball to be played.'"

A run-scoring single by Billy Hoermann in the fourth tied the score before Shan connected.

Toms River East, which had defeated Toms River South (3-2, 2-2) on Tuesday, pulled within a run on an RBI single by Bryan Frank in the fifth, but winning pitcher Chad Geran ended the threat by turning a 1-3 double play on a line drive back to the mound.
Geran (2-0) struck out three, walked none, and allowed six hits in a route-going performance.
C.J. Alonso doubled in the third inning to bring TR North within 2-1.

Alonso and Hoermann each had two hits and Frank and Brady Doyle both went 2-for-3 for the Raiders.

Chris Wedding had an RBI double in the first, when Toms River East took a 2-0 lead.

"THE BEAT" pitched a HECK of a game today, if i were a writer, would have wrote it as a 8-0 complete game shut-out and THE BEAT with the BAYVILLE HEAT also helped himself out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth by picking off the runner at third and ended the game with a strike-out. (but i ain't no writer, just love high school baseball)

i forgot to mention that the BEAT pitches for Central a school that is maybe the third oldest school in Ocean County and older than those 2 other TR schools you seem to favor over the 9 other schools in our great county

central needs good, organized, positive coaching staff that utilizes motivation to move their teams forward. the players and the parents would like that.... football is not the same as baseball..and they could use a good extra batting/pitching coach to round out the staff so to develop players and a program that works on good discipline, with goals in mind. Postive hard work....they have the potential!

Re Central: I am publishing your remarks but please be aware we do NOT intend to use this blog to be critical of coaching staffs.. if that was your intent.

I am sure coach Frulio and his staff are doing all they can. If you want an extra coach you'd better go see your board of education!!!

Middletown North is looking pretty strong this year, shutting out a good colts neck team wednesday. They are getting some pretty good pitching??

Pitching was probably the question mark this year. Byrnes, Engelbrecht, looking solid so far.

From my preseason comments:

My outlook: A battle tested club that could challenge in A North. Mager leads a potent attack that swings the bats generally throughout the lineup. Will need Englebrecht and another arm or two to emerge into prominence.

Byrnes looks like that "emerging" arm.

You're absolutely right.. that's NOT what was intended. The school board should support it's sports programs more strongly. There's plenty of ability....good job Central!!
