JACKSON ROARS BACK

The Jackson Memorial High School baseball team borrowed a page from its long ball past Monday.

""This was Larry D'Zio ball,'' said former Jackson slugger Marc Fink, now an assistant coach. Fink set the Shore Conference career record of 27 home runs when D'Zio was the boss.

Monday the Jaguars, now under the guidance of third year coach Frank Malta, used their first home runs of 2007, a pair of three-run blasts, to set up a come-from-behind nondivision victory over Freehold.

Jackson (3-1) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to down the Colonials (1-1), three on a home run Carl Lofaso before Ryan Guarino's RBI double sent home Corey Carr from second base with the game-winner.

""That's (home run tradition) what we were talking about right after the game,'' said Malta.

"Marc gives me a lot of history of this place. We don't have the same type of lineup of (of the D'Zio teams), but today we did. We got some runners on and hit a couple of three-run jacks."".''
Bill Lee unloaded a three-run home run for Jackson in the third inning cutting into a 4-0 Freehold lead.

""The one thing they (his players) talked about was they wanted to finish the deal,'' said Malta. ""It took us to the very end of the ball game to finish it.''

Senior right-hander Joe Marchitelli quieted Freehold through the middle innings. ""He wanted the ball in that situation to stop the bleeding,'' said Malta.

Senior right-hander Dave Ricci, though yielding two runs in the top of the seventh, collected his first varsity victory.

Brian Prisk homered with one on for Freehold.
