Both Ben Miller and Mike McDonough have probably all ready figured out they will pitch often for Rumson-Fair Haven Regional this season.
Tuesday, the two seniors combined to pitch the final five innings in relief to help the Bulldogs record a 9-4 upset win over No. 5 Raritan in a Shore Conference Class A Central game.
McDonough (1-0) pitched the middle 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win and Miller got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth by getting a 4-6-3 double play to the first batter he faced. Miller pitched hitless ball over the final 22/3 innings to pick up the save.
""They've both thrown in all three games so far and started one and relieved in two,'' said Rumson coach Kevin James, whose team improved to 3-0 both overall and in the division. ""Miller is hitting his spots, throwing strikes and able to hit keep his pitch count down. ""He's going to stat one and be in the pen the next day. Same with McDonough.''
Rumson, which trailed 4-0 after 21/2 innings, took the lead with a six-run fourth in which McDonough lofted a sacrfice fly, Tucker Bowe laid down a run-scoring bunt single, with another run scoring on a throwing error on the same play, and Steve Giordano delivered an RBI single.
The Bulldogs closed to within, 4-3, in the third when Miller, who had two doubles, in the game, cracked a two-run, two-bagger.
""The guys are taking their responsibilities and roles and really running with them,'' James said. ""We've used six different pitchers in three games and today we used 13 players. We're not playing individual ball. We're playing team ball. Everyone understands their role. For us to succeed, we need everyone to contribute.''
Bowe also had two hits for Rumson and Dave Shrum had a two-run double with two out in the second for Raritan (2-1, 0-1).
SJ Vianney 9, Matawan 8
The St. John Vianney Comeback Kids struck again Tuesday.
After spotting Matawan a six-run lead the Lancers roared back, scoring three runs, in the bottom of the seventh inning to snatch a 9-8 victory over Matawan in a nondivsion game.
St. John had trailed Red Bank Catholic and Middletown south in its prior victories.
""We're team that comes back, we're not going to give up,'' said first-year SJ Vianney coach Mike Morgan. ""I think this is becoming a habit.''
A single by Ed Cetnar and two walks loaded the bases with none out in the seventh. Cetnar scored on a wild pitch, Matt Deering singled in the tying run, and Marc Teel singled home Craig DeLuise with the winning run.
Matt Buragina hit a three-run home run helping Matawan take an 8-2 lead after four innings.
Deering and Cetnar each had three hits for St. John Vianney.
Junior Andrew Holler pitched the last two innings to earn his first varsity win.
Morgan said senior centerfielder Chris Lewnes left the game with a sprained ankle and is considered ""day-to=-day.''
MONMOUTH 10, NEPTUNE 0:Pat Gaughran went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI including a two-run `double and and RBI single that ended the Class B North game via the 10-run rule for the Golden Falcons (2-1, 1-0) as they defeated the Scarlet Fliers (2-2, 0-2)in Class B North. Mike Sevilla had a 2-run home run in the second inning and senior Joe Connors pitched a four-hitter with five strikeouts.
KEANSBURG 10, POINT BEACH 1: James O'Hanlon went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored and pitched five innings of four-hit ball with seven strikeouts on the mound as the Titans (1-1, 1-1) defeated the Garnet Gulls (3-2, 1-1) in a Class B Central game.
Justin Lombardi was 3-for-5 with an RBI and scored two runs. Anthony Valle and Dan Carusotto both had two hits and two RBI.
KEYPORT 14, MATER DEI 8:Jerry Hettrick and Tim Snyder had RBI singles in a five-run second inning and Alex Perseghin a two-run double in a five run third to send the Red Raiders (2-1, 2-1) to a Class B Central win over the Seraphs (0-5, 0-4).
Craig Youncofski, singled, doubled, tripled, and drove in three runs for Keyport.
Mike Pellicane singled, doubled, hit a solo home run, and drove in three runs for Mater Dei.
OCEAN 8, LONG BRANCH 0:Keith Weinkofsky doubled twice and singled and Eric Hinkle drove in five runs with a singe and double as the No. 2 Spartans (2-2, 1-1) downed the Green Wave (0-2, 0-1) in a Class B North game.
Sean DaSilva had three hits, an RBI, and scored three runs. Winning pitcher Kyle Norman struck out seven.
JACKSON 4, BRICK MEMORIAL 2: Carl Lofaso belted a two-run homer to cap a three-run first inning for his second homer in as many days and Kevin Needham got the final four outs to pick up the save as the Jaguars (4-1, 2-1) defeated the Mustangs (0-4, 0-4) in a Class A South game and made it three straight wins.
Lofaso's homer came after Joe Feaster stroked an RBI double. It was the second homer in as many at-bats for Lofaso. He had a three-run homer that tied the game in the seventh inning Monday in a 7-6 win over Freehold.
Joe Marchitelli gave the Jaguars a key insurance run with an RBI single in the sixth.
Needham struck out one, walked two and allowed no hits while pitching out jams over the final 11/3 innings in relief of Sean Stimpfel, who struck out six, walked one and allowed two runs on eight hits over the first 52/3 innings.
Jay Gordon was 2-for-4 with a run scored for Brick Memorial.
HOLMDEL 7, RED BANK 3: Antony Ferraioli went 2-for-2 with an RBI and got the final three outs in relief and Andrew Pagnucci slugged a two-run homer in the sixth as the Hornets (2-1, 1-0) defeated the Bucs (0-3, 0-3) in a Class A Central game.
Kyle O'Gorman had an RBI double in the third when Holmdel scored four runs to break a scoreless tie.
Joe Brescia allowed three runs on six hits and struck out five and walked none over the first six innings to pick up his first win of the season.
Eric Raybon was 2-for-4 for Red Bank.
SHORE 8, HENRY HUDSON 4:Winning pitcher Rob Sommers and Erik Swinton had RBI hits in a four-run eighth inning that lifted the Blue Devils (3-0, 3-0) to a Class B Central win over the Admirals (1-1, 1-1).
Brothers Jeff and Brian Olofson each had three hits for Henry Hudson and Brian drove in Jeff who had tripled in the fifth inning when Henry Hudson tied the score, 4-4.
Henry Hudson had runnners at second and third with none out in the last of the sixth inning but Somers pitched out of the jam.

i heard kyle norman carried a perfect game into the 5th..any truth to this?
Could be...I did not take that game over the phone. But LB did finish with two hits.
Not to take away from his strong effort but I think it's more note worthy to take a pefect game into - say - the sixth or seventh.
As bad as L.B. has been in the past,there is hope on the horizon with some baseball talent on the freshman team.
Why is the program at L.B. so bad every year?
LB has a decent baseball tradition, though not lately. It has not had a winning season since going 16-7, 8-3 in 2000. Exacty what the problem is I couldn't tell you.
