by1 STAFF REPORT

Chris Sorice did not get off to a good start Friday.

However, it ended up being a very good day for the Brick High School pitcher.

Sorice, after walking three of the first four batters he faced against Jackson, proceeded to throw a three-hitter and singled in the game's only run in the bottom of the first inning as the Green Dragons (3-2, 3-2) defeated the Jaguars (5-2, 3-2), 1-0, in a Shore Conference Class A South game.

The result snapped Jackson's four-game winning streak, it's longest winning streak since 2003

Sorice, who struck out four and walked four, got out of the bases-loaded mess in the first by getting a 6-4-3 double play ball.

""After they loaded the bases, our catcher, Jared Page, went out to talk to Chris,'' said Brick coach Jason Groschel. ""He wasn't loose, and it was cold. After that talk, he loosened up and threw the ball with a lot more authority.''

Brick also turned a double play in the third inning after a one-out single.

""That double play in the first inning was the key. That could have been a big inning for them,'' Groschel said, whose team has won two straight one-run games.

Jackson pitcher Joe Marchitelli pitched a solid game in defeat. He fired a two-hitter and struck out six and walked one. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

""It was a windy day and a tough day to hit. Hats off to both pitchers. There weren't really a lot of difficult plays by either team.''

FREEHOLD 4, OCEAN 0: Matt Yuhas pitched the way a coach would expect his ace pitcher to as he fired a one-hitter to lead the unranked Colonials (2-1, 2-0) to the Class B North win over the Spartans (2-3, 1-2), who are ranked No. 6 in the Asbury Park Press Top 10.

A junior right-hander who transferred to Freehold from Colts Neck, Yuahas struck out seven walked one and allowed just a leadoff single to left by Neal Yaffe in the sixth.

Ocean's slugging catcher Keith Weinkofsky popped up, flew out and grounded out in his three-at-bats.

""This was probably one of the best games I've seen pitched,'' said Freehold coach Steve Kochinski. ""He worked the ball in and out and changed pace on them.''

Colton Ruggieri gave Yuhas the only run he would need with a solo home run with one out in the second.

Freehold added another run in the fourth when Jeff Frost scored on a throwing error and two more in the fifth as Franco Fabiano delivered a sacrifice fly and Ryan Kresky scored on a passed ball.

""That was the best game I've seen my players play since I became the coach,'' said Kochinski, who is his fourth season at Freehold. ""That was the most intense they've ever been for a game. It's a big win for us this early in the season.''

With Seton Hall Prep rank #1 in the nation (per SI), the big question is, can CBA repeat the magic of 1977?
