The high school baseball teams representing the six schools in in Freehold Regional High
School district will not be participating in the 2007 Monmouth County Tournament.
Ted Jarmusz, MCT director and the baseball coach at Monmouth Regional High School, said
the schools, Colts Neck, Freehold, Freehold Township, Howell, and Marlboro, elected not to
enter apparently because of transportation issues. The 19-team MCT field was seeded Wednesday night and is
tenatively scheduled to begin this week.
According to James Wasser, Freehold District Superintendent, the problem is a lack of
bus drivers, a situation he said he hopes will be rectified by next season.
However Wasser said the district's softball teams will be able to compete in the softball
MCT.
""It's my understanding the (softball) tournament director is working with my athletic directors so
we could be able to participate,'' said Wasser.
""Unfortunately the baseball seeding was done and it's my understanding the playing
restrictions in baseball are more difficult to work around.''
""They (Freehold schools) were given an awful lot of opportunity to enter,'' said Jarmusz.
We extended the deadline for them up to the night of the seeding meeting in the hopes
something would change.''
Said Wasser, ""It's not the money, it's not the entrance fees, it's none of that.
"In
this day and age it amazes me that I can't get people who would want to drivea bus for a run,
and make fifteen something an hour to take people to sporting events.
""My transportation coordinator called me and said that there are so many events going on
in the spring that we have to kind of pick and choose what we can take them to.''
Ironically Freehold Township is the defending champion and Tom Poricelli of the Patriots was the recepient of the 2006 MCT's Rich Veth Memorial $500 scholarship.
Frank Gualtieri, Freehold Township coach, said he regretted his team would be unable to play in 2007.
""The way it was presented to us by our athletic director (Brian
Donahue) before the first spring practice was there were not enough available drivers in the
district,'' Gualtieri said.
