Tuesday baseball scoreboard/RUMSON OFF TO BEST START IN OVER 10 YEARS

According to Asbury Park Press records, Rumson's 5-0 start is its best since 1996 when it also began the season 5-0 ..

The way Rumson baseball coach Kevin James sees things, his Bulldogs are doing exactely what he was hoping this season.''

""They are playing good, team baseball. They are doing the little things,'' said James after Rumson improved to 5-0 on the season with a 5-4 victory against Red Bank Catholic, thanks in a large part to a key sacrifice bunt that came on an 0-2 pitch.

""It was the turning point of the game,'' said James.

Tied at 2 in the home fifth, the Bulldogs got a walk and a stolen base before D.J. Breckenridge put down the bunt, between third and the pitcher. Pat Quinn fielded the bunt, but his throw went to right field, allowing the lead run to score. Later, with two outs and the bases loaded, winning pitcher Ben Miller singled in Rumson's final two runs. Miller withstood a two-run RBC rally in the sixth, making him 4-0.

Miller had driven in the first Rumson run with a two-out hit in the first helping them to a 2-1 lead. RBC tied the game on an RBI double by Tim Griswold in the fourth.

""We only had four hits, but we drew five walks and had a hit batter. And four of the five runs came on two-out hits when we had runners in scoring position,'' said James. ""Were exited with start. It was only Ben's second start and he went seven. I like the way we're playing.''

rdup WALL 3, LONG BRANCH 0: Matt Debonis allowed only one hit and struck out 12 to lead the Knights (5-1, 4-0) to a Class B North victory over the Green Wave (0-4, 0-3). Debonis's no-hit attempt was broken up in the fourth inning when Ryan Kirsch led off with a double. He only worked five innings. Matt Logan had a two-run double for the Knights in the third inning.

rdup OCEAN 2, MONMOUTH 1: Kyle Norman scattered five hits and then drove in the game winner with a single in the sixth inning to help the Spartans (4-3, 2-2) knock off the Class B North leading Falcons (4-2, 3-1). Norman's single to left in the sixth cashed in Neal Yaffe with the deciding run. He had walked and went to second on a fielder's choice. In the third inning Norman also singled with Yaffe on second, but he was thrown out at the plate. Norman had seven strikeouts to improve to 3-0 for the Spartans.

rdup SHORE 12, ASBURY PARK 0: Junior John Benedict's first start turned out to be a memorable one, as he tossed five-perfect innings in the Blue Devils (5-0, 5-0) victory. Benedict, who had 10 strikeouts, got a great play from shortstop Rob
Somers, who went deep in the hole at short to get an out in the fifth inning, to preserve the perfect game.
