Lions off to roaring start /Tuesday baseball results

Compiled by Tony Graham, Steve Falk, and the Asbury Park Press sports staff

Midd. North 5, Middletown South 1

Jon Scala, Middletown North High School baseball coach, said he considers senior Kevin Engelbrecht his ""big game""pitcher in 2007.
""A lot of pressure on him today and he responded,,' said Scala Tuesday after Engelbrecht pitched a complete game four-hitter and delivered an RBI single in helping the No. 7 Lions down Middletown South, 5-1, in a Shore Conference Class A North game.
""We beat them twice last year and they came in with a chip on their shoulder I'm sure,''said Scala, a former South player and coach. ""It's a big Middletown rivalry and the fact I played and coached at South under and with coach (Steve) Antonucci made it that much more special.''
North led 2-1 in the fifth inning when senior Pete Koegel ripped a two-run double to left field and scored on an Englebrecht single.
Mike Farrell homered for the Eagles in the second inning.
North took a 2-0 first inning lead on a Sean Byrnes' RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Engelbrecht.

Lion news: Koegel is playing due to an injury to starting first baseman Chris Rotolo.

MANASQUAN 10, MONMOUTH 4:Tom Phillips went 4-for-5, drove in three runs, and scored twice as the Warriors (1-0) poured across six runs in the final two innings to down the Falcons (0-1) in a nondivision game.
Steve Schatzman, Tom Butts, and Chris Dettlinger each scored a pair of runs for Manasquan which used two suicide squeeze bunts in the seventh inning.

Pat Goughran had two hits for Monmouth.

BARNEGAT 4, LACEY 3: Sam Redmond drove in three of his team's runs, including two on a two-out triple in the first inning as the Bengals (1-1) built a four-run lead and held on to record a nondivisional victory over Lions (0-2).
Alex Tynan knocked in a first-inning run with a ground out.
Lacey closed to within a run as pinch-hitter Ed Trapper's two-run single highlighted a three-run sixth, but Barnegat held on as center fielder David Gomez made a running catch in left-center on a smash by Zack Pierce for the final out of the game.

Tiger Tales: Second year Barnegat will make its First Energy Park debut 4 p.m. Saturday when it plays Mountain Lakes.

POINT BEACH 9, MATER DEI 8: Mike Sciamarelli singled, doubled, drove in two runs for the Garnet Gulls (1-0, 1-0) and took the mound in relief to halt a rally by the Seraphs (0-2, 0-2) with a strikeout with the tying run at third base that closed out the Class B Central contest.

Point Beach used a two-run double by Colin Trautman (3-for-4) and a two-run home run by Dean Daley when it scored six runs in the fourth inning to mount a 7-2 lead.
A two-run home run by P.J. Seggell made it 9-4 in the top of the seventh before Mater Dei stormed back.
An RBI single by Tom Matthews, a John Supon sacrifice fly, and a two-run throwing error by Sciamarelli made it a one-run game before Sciamarelli got the final out.

Gull news: Point Beach posted its first win over Mater Dei in five tries going back to 2004.

MANALAPAN 12, WEST WINDSOR SOUTH 2:Dave Becker pitched four innings and scored two runs and Nick Turno singled, doubled, and scored three runs as the Braves (2-0) rolled to a nonconference win over WW South (0-1) in Fort Pierce, Fla.
Pat Flanagan had a two-run single in a three-run first inning and tripled and Turano had an RBI double when the Braves smacked six hits in a five-run second inning.

Braves new world: Manalapan closes its Florida trip when it plays Stuyvesant, N.Y. 3 p.m. Thursday.
.

ST. ROSE 8, KEYPORT 2:Mike Kyle slammed a two-run triple in the third inning and winning pitcher Brian Donohoe went 3-for-3 with a run scored and singled home a two-out run in the first inning to lead the No. 6 Purple Roses (2-0, 2-0) to a Class B Central win over the Red Raiders (0-1, 0-1).
Donohoe, a senior right-hander who transferred from Wall, worked the first five innings, striking out five, and Billy Kurtz finished up.

The 20-win club: The win was the 20th in a row for St. Rose in divisional play.

As far as the trivia is the answer keansburg? I think it was on like the last divisional game of the season 2 or 3 years ago.

And Scott Stump in this article, http://www.digitalsports.com/NJ/ScottStump/Ranaudo.htm,said st rose's pitcher today throws in the mid 80's. There's no way he throws anywhere close to that. I cranked 2 doubles off him today and i can tell you he throws mid to low 70's tops. You's gotta stop making st rose sound better then they are. Ranaudo went 0-2 against me today and the best player on the field for them today was their 3rd baseman who's got an outstanding glove over at 3rd, i didnt catch his name though.

tony I know the trivia answer. I was there. It was the day after St. Rose won at CBA in the SCT. Tim McCann carried St. Rose to victory.

The next day St. Rose could do nothing write and lost to Shore Regional at Shore. It was a sunny day but a dreary day in St. Rose.
Little did St. Rose know that the pitcher who startee the last divisional loss (Chris Rearick) would become a solid-consistent contributor to the staff in 2005 as they made a run towards their first State Title in over a decade.
