CBA gallops to sixth in a row, ends Colts Neck streak
Senior right-hander Dave Laufer feels this is the most talented CBA team he's played for.
""It's just a matter of us playing the way we can,'' said Laufer after he hurled six scoreless innings and drove in three runs to lead CBA, No. 6 in the Asbury Park Press Top 10 Poll, to a 6-0 victory over No. 9 Colts Neck Wednesday at Colt Field.
The win was the sixth in a row for CBA (11-3, 10-3) which can clinch at least a tie for the top spot in the division when it sends senior Kyle Slate (4-0) to the mound Thursday vs. Middletown North.
Colts Neck (11-4, 9-3), which saw its six-game winning streak end, is still in the running for the division's Public School championship.
CBA hasn't tasted defeat since April 20 when Manalapan threatened to end its run at a possible eighth consecutive first place finish.
""After the Manalapan loss, for a lack of a better word, we talked it out,'' said Laufer.
""And we're back on track.''
Laufer had an RBI single in the first inning and senior Mike Galeotafiore made it 3-0 in the third inning with a two run home run over the fence in left center.
Laufer's two-run double to right made it 5-0 in the fifth.
Laufer struck out four and walked two before Galeotafiore pitched a scoreless seventh.
The Cougars had been averaging 10.5 runs per game in their winning streak but Wednesday never had a runner reach third base.
""He (Laufer) had our number for sure,'' said Mike Yorke, Colts Neck coach.
""We're still OK. We can still tie for the division championship with these guys (CBA) if we do what we have to do Friday and Saturday.''
Colts Neck plays Middletown South Friday and Marlboro Saturday to end its division season.
