RBC doubles its approach for third 2007 Shore Challenge win
The Red Bank Catholic High School baseball team seems to be enjoying the challenge of the Shore Challenge.
It won its third 2007 Challenge game without defeat Sunday 12-2 over Hillsborough when the Caseys (12-6) scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the contest via the 10-run rule.
Saturday RBC whipped St. Joseph's, N.Y. 10-2 and last weekend St. Joseph's Metuchen, 12-2.
But after the win last week it went on a three-game skid during which it averaged two runs capped by a 10-2 loss to Rumson Thursday.
""That was basically a low point,'' said RBC coach Tony Martinez who called a team meeting Friday to review what he felt should be his team's hitting approach.
""We're a doubles, line drive team, a situational hitting team, not a home-run htting team,'' he said.
""So Friday we practiced going back to the basics.''After hitting six doubles Saturday it rapped another half dozen Sunday, two by Jake Beim in its victory over the Raiders (12-3).
RBC led 3-2 entering the bottom of the sixth but a Beim two-run double widened the gap and and a two-run double by Tim Griswold ended the game.
""It's nice to start to swing the bat a little at this time of year,'' said Martinez. """We're hoping that funk we were in is behind us.'' Junior right-hander Mike Yaccarine pitched the six innings to improve to 4-2.
