SHORE CHALLENGE GAME REPORTS

CBA 1, GLOUCESTER CATHOLIC 0 : The Colts (13-3) scored a fifth inning run on a balk and Dan Diaz and Remy Cohen combined on a four-hitter in a win over the Rams (9-4) at FiirstEnergyPark, Lakewood.
Diaz had just stolen third base and A.J. Szatkowski was the runner at first when the balk was ruled.
""They faked a throw to first with runners at first and third and I guess the umpires ruled the pitcher didn't step off the rubber,'' said Marty Kenney, CBA coach.
Diaz started the game for CBA and was relieved by Remy Cohen in the third inning with bases loaded and nobody out. Cohen, (3-0), a junior left-hander, got out of the inning with two stikeouts and a pop up and went on to nail down CBA's eighth win in a row.
Cohen allowed one-hit the rest of the game and finished with seven strikeouts, hit a batter, and walked none.
According to Kenney the game marked the fifth meeting between the two parochial powers and CBA's third win in the series which had previously been contested in the NJSIAA Tournament.

TOMS RIVER EAST 10, ST. PETER'S (JC) 6: Frank Dehart's RBI single snapped a 5-5 tie in the fitth inning and a two-run single by Bryan Frank and an RBI single by John Smicklo keyed a four-run sixth when the No. 5 Raiders (13-5) secured the victory over the Marauders (11-9) at Raider Ravine.
Dehart went 3-for-4 with two RBI as TR East rapped 14 singles.
Junior right-hander Steve Fereno (4-0) pitched the complete game, struck out eight, and walked two, while yielding only three earned runs.

MANASQUAN 8, ST. JOSEPH'S, N.Y. 2: Junior shortstop Tom Phillips went 3-for-4 with three RBI and scored a run as the Warriors (9-8) downed the Vikings (7-3) at the Wall Complex.

In the sixth Phillips singled home Vanstolk.
Phillips hit a two-run double in the second for a 4-0 lead.
Sophomore right-hander Karl Fiske (2-1) threw his first complete game scattering six hits and struck out five, walked one, and yielded one earned run.

BARNEGAT 7, MILLBURN 6 (8 innings): The Bengals (12-5) saw a 6-0 lead disappear but a Sean Collins RBI single sent home Chris Smit with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the Millers (11-7) at Toms River East.
The triumph enabled the second year program to tie last year's victory mark when the team went 12-8.
Alex Tynan blasted a three-run triple in the second inning when Barnegat scored four runs to take a 6-0 lead.
Eric Smithman and Matt McNeal had RBI singles for Barnegat in the first inning.

- Tony Graham

OLD TAPPAN 7, POINT BORO 4:
Pat Biserta went 3-for-3, drove in two runs, scored once, and was intentionally walked, but the Panthers (7-8) fell to the Golden Knights (12-5) at FirstEnergy Park.
Biserta, batting .452, with two home runs and seven RBI, had RBI singles in the first and sixth innings each time chasing home Jim Squillante.
Squillante finished 2-for-3 with a walk.
All of Old Tappan's run were unearned as Point Boro committed seven errors.

A couple of really interesting matchups for Sunday. Manchester/Spotswood, TRE/SPP, CBA/Catholic, SJV/Ramapo are look really good.

The early Midd South/Steinert game could get ugly real fast, but I guess anything can happen these days

Tony,

I know the subject of parity as come on the board before. With that being said, Do you believe that there is a favorite for the Ocean County Tournament and Shore Conference Tournament this year?

North is your #1 team right now, but they really havent played much of non-conference schedule...they do have St. Rose coming up.

Ocean has been the hottest team in the Shore as of late. Wall's pitching is tough, CBA can beat anybody on any given day... And If pitching continues to improve, you can count out teams like Toms River East and South. St Rose is tough to beat with Ranouldo on the mound. Colts Neck, Jackson and Manalapan could also be teams to watch.

Same can be said with the OCT tournament... does a team like Manchester have a chance to knock off a Toms River School. Watch out of teams such as Pt. Boro and Barnegat in this tournament... especially when the three tournaments collide and the pitching gets slim

Any thoughts?

I still have to go with Ocean, they have enough pitching and as good a lineup as there is.

Colts Neck has a very tough lineup, too, and has pitched better than expected (well, I expected).

CBA playing very well now.

TRN pitching has been very good.

Can't see the smaller schools going that deep, not enough arms.

St. Rose has Ranaudo and it depends, seems to me, on how they use him how far they go in what tournament.

I am not going to mention every team here.

Overall I am looking forward to the SCT.

Tony,
I know you must throw these articles up very fast and want to get the info out quickly, but you should proofread the CBA article, Pitchers name is wrong, his name is Cohen not Remy. It's Remy Cohen and bases were loaded not "loafed"
Thanks.

Re: Balk call. I heard from someone who was there that they also thought the call was in correct.

But in this instance - a Shore team vs. an out-of-area team -it works for me.

Anyway - Cohen pitched a dandy game in relief...got out of that bases-loaded jam in the third..good for him..deserves the win.

Re: Cohen. Sigh. Yes..I messed up. I think I'm trying to re-name the whole team .

First "Pete"..now "Rich"..just seven more positions to go!

Again..my apologies. Bottom line. He pitched a helluva game..

Tony,
Thank you so much for correcting the CBA article, however the first paragraph still says Rich Remy instead of Remy Cohen, just thought you would want to know.
Thanks for your very speedy corrections! You're the best!
