Mater Dei names football coach
Nick Varanelli, an assistant coach at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School the last five years, was recently named Mater Dei High School's head football coach, Mater Dei athletic director Gary Carmody said Thursday.
Varanelli, who also is a former assistant coach at Red Bank Regional, Red Bank Catholic and Long Branch, succeeds John Corneliusen who resigned during the winter to pursue a graduate degree, Carmody said.
""We just felt out of all the candidates who applied he (Varanelli) fit our needs here,'' Carmody said. ""Being at Rumson the past five years, he had seen Mater Dei, he knows our players and our program. He's very excited about our school and he gives us the opportunity to offer us a strong program that will increase our size in numbers.
Mater Dei went 4-6 last year for its most wins since the 1999 team, under current Lacey assistant coach Craig Cicardo went 8-3 and advanced to the NJSIAA Non-Public Group I championship game.
The Seraphs were 6-24 in Corneliusen's three seasons.

1. MAter Dei will not win a football game next year.
2. It's baseball season.
To anon - This is also a news forum..where you can get football news, local NJSIAA news, etc.
And - while I do love high school baseball - in my opinion more people care about high school football - than any other schoalstic sport in NJ.
