Monday high school baseball

Hi all.

We were a tad short-handed tonight. Both Steve Falk and myself were out of the office. But we (the APP sports department) showed how expendable we are!

Here are all scores.

I got the Wall and St. Rose games early figuring they were some "key" games of the day and Steve also took some games before he left after a long day of covering golf (the man is dedicated!)

Some game write ups are below.

St. Rose 9, Shore 4 - Roses clinch top spot in B Central. Owen Stewart 2-run single in five-run second wipes out early 2-0 Shore lead.

Wall 7, Monmouth 1 - Knights clinch B North championship outright. Junior Brandon Miles goes to 6-0 with a CG 3-hitter, Ks 4. Drew Pinero 2-for-4, 2 RBI.

On the road to what is shaping up to be a memorable season, the St. Rose baseball team cleared one hurdle Monday as the Purple Roses used a five-run second inning to down Shore, 9-4, and clinch the Class B Central non-public title at FirstEnergy Park.
With St. Rose (14-1, 12-0) trailing 2-1 in the second inning and with one out and men on first and second, Connor Smith grounded to the third baseman who stepped on the bag for the force. His throw to first for the double play was bobbled, however, and the inning continued.
Chris Bresnahan and Vin Vinci then came through with RBI singles on consecutive at-bats to give the Purple Roses the lead at 3-2. Two batters later, Owen Stewart smacked a two-RBI single to make it 5-2 as St. Rose took full advantage of a big Shore (14-3, 11-3) miscue.
""I thought we played very well and were able to come through when Shore had a misstep,'' St. Rose coach Bart McInerney. ""We have a lot of goals this season and this is just the first step.''
Casey Cannon went five innings for St. Rose, giving up eight hits while striking out two and walking just one. Vinci pitched the last two innings for Shore, including a 1-2-3 top of the seventh.

HOWELL 2, FREEHOLD 0: Junior right-hander Brian Battaglia scattered six hits, struck out 10, and walked four to pick up his first win of the season as the Rebels (7-11) defeated the Colonials (5-8) in a nondivisional game.
Howell scored the only runs of the game in the second as Tim Lamirande scored on a passed ball and Casey Brannigan had an RBI single.
Freehold stranded 11 men on base.
The Colonials will send Matt Yuhas to the mound today at Ocean, whose slugging catcher Keith Weinkofsky is two home runs away from tying 1994 Jackson graduate Marc Fink's Shore Conference career record of 27. Yuhas one-hit Ocean on April 13.

KEYPORT 6, KEANSBURG 5: The Red Raiders (6-9, 6-8) scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to spoil Titans (7-8, 7-7) pitcher James O'Hanlon's no-hit bid and pick up a Class B Central win.
O'Hanlon struck out 11 and had not surrendered a hit heading into the sixth inning, but Matt Farkas led off the inning with a double to break up the no-hitter and start the rally. Tim Snyder doubled home two runs to start the scoring, and Brian Derechailo ripped a two-run single to tie the game at 5. Mike Windeknecht followed with a single and Derechailo scored on an overthrow to third to give Keyport the lead.
O'Hanlon finished with 13 strikeouts in six innings, but he took the loss.

TR NORTH 10, LACEY 0: Senior right-hander Chad Geran had a perfect game or 4 innings and wound up with a two-hitter as the No.1 Mariners (15-2, 12-1) defeated the Lions (3-15, 3-11) in a Class A South game.
Geran (5-0) struck out nine, seven in the first 4š innings, and walked none. Neither of Lacey's two baserunners reached second base.
Billy Hoermann went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Geran was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

Even though my brain is fogged over at this hour (and some would say any hour) I do believe it was a currently active high school pitcher...
