GAME REPORTS

POINT BEACH 14, NEW EGYPT 10:
Point Beach coach Ray Ellis feels his team can make a run in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group I playoffs, similar to 2001 when the Garnet Gulls reached the SJ I championship game.
"The pitching was more established, more dominant in '01,'' Ellis said. "The four guys we have now, Gourley (Craig Gourley, Sciamarelli (Sam Sciamarelli), Trautman (Colin Trautman) and Seggel (P.J. Seggel) lack experience. But if one or two of them get hot, then, yeah, we can be a factor because we can hit.''
Point Beach (12-11) hit Tuesday. It banged out 16 hits and scored five in the sixth and four more in the seventh and then held on to defeat New Egypt, 14-10, in a South Jersey Group I first-round game.
It was the Garnet Gulls' first state tournament win since 2001, according to Ellis. Ellis said 2001 is the last time Point Beach qualified for the state tournamen,
The The Garnet Gulls, the No. 9 seed, will play at No. 1 seed Pitman Friday in a SJ I quarterfinal.
Trautman and Shane Ferguson each had three hits. Ferguson had a two-run single in a five-run sixth and also scored three runs. Trautman had two RBI and scored two runs.
