Super Seven

What players do you think will get drafted...and what players do you think may sign???

This from Saturday's baseball notebook:

Call them the "Super Seven" among Shore Conference senior high school baseball players.

In what would be an unprecedented local development, at least that many players might hear their names called on Thursday or Friday during the 2007 Major League First-Year Player Draft, according to several Major League Baseball scouts who asked not to be identified due to their clubs' policies.

"That would be excellent (for one conference)," a scout said.

The names of pitcher Anthony Ranaudo of St. Rose, pitcher J.C. Menna of Red Bank Catholic, outfielder Pat Biserta of Point Boro, pitcher Kyle Slate of CBA, outfielder Joe Talerico of Toms River South, catcher Keith Weinkofsky of Ocean and infielder/pitcher Marc Zecchino of Raritan are said to be on the desks of scouts who have been making their way to the Shore throughout the spring.

Tony again i was wondering this week where the stats are i checked both the sports and the rally Saturday and both today, and haven't found anything?

I think Slate is better than Ranaudo and is the best in the Shore. He should go the highest out of any of the Shore kids in the draft.

We did not run the stats this week..mainly because for most schools - whose seasons were over - they had not changed from the prior week and we did not want to ask the Bart McInerney..who does the stats for us - to go through the whole procedure for so few schools.

There will be a final stat package with the All-Shore team in mid June.

If it makes you feel any better softball stats did not run either (Title 9 you know!)

Thanks for your interest.

Liike Ranaudo, Slate's a big kid though he's not 6-7. The scouts, I think, love Ranaudo's "potential."

I didn't know Slate swung the bat as well as he does. That's a talent I hope he keeps working on no matter what level he advances to as a pitcher. It can help him in so many ways.

I also heard the head of the major league scouting bureau was at Slates last start.

Perhaps scouts maybe at`Slates' state game Tuesday
, then again, their minds are usually made up by now.

One more start may not make a difference, no matter how he fares.

I think that Slate is a better high school pitcher then Raunado but Raunado I can see has a little more potential due to his size an weight. Slate will excel at whatever level he chooses to play bc the kid has alot of heart. If he brings home the first state championship in 30 years to the Colts I believe he should be a lock for Ledger player of the year. He should definitley be Pitcher of the Year for the Press.

The Press has a Player of the Year period. There is no Pitcher/Hitter of the Year and - of course - there is a Coach of the Year.

Re Slate..well..if Slate wins Tuesday and then beats S Hall or whoever Saturday - I can only speak for the Press - I guess he would have a rather decent shot at Player of the Year.

Now there is also this kid from Ocean that has hit a just a few home runs in his career and leads the Shore again this year..so I think he also rates very high consideration....

Lets say CBA gets to next Saturday and Slate goes on 3 days rest vs Porceilo $ SHP..who gets brought in after the 10th inning of a 2-2 ball game vs SHP..I know SHP has at leats Danelli (ND bound)???
With their other games this week which game does Coach Kenny throw under the bus to save at least 1 arm for extra innings ??

I feel Slate should be APP player of the year.He won 11 games!!!!!!!
His ERA is next to nothing! The catcher from Ocean has a lot to be proud of but I feel Slate has done far more for his team!

Tony I am going to be honest with you. Slate and Weinkofsky are two great players, but they are one dimensional. Slate just pitches, and other than a hitter Weinkofsky isn't much of a catcher. When your looking at player of the year, you look for an all around athlete who is a game changer, a leader, plays multiple positions when needed, hits for average, hits for power, scores runs, steals bases, and hits guys in. You want an all around baseball player, that does a little bit of everything. Congrats to Slate for being 11-0 and Weinkofsky for breaking the BIG record hitting 30 home runs, but there are better all around athletes.

Marc Zecchino, RARITAN, multiple positions dominate pitcher and good hitter,
Dave Laufer,CBA, good closer and big time hitter in a solid lineup, and produces in tough division,
Joe Talerico, TR SOUTH,leads in many categories, plays everywhere and produces in tough division
All big time players and all round athletes...
RESPONSE????
ps-Steve falk does a great job(humbly)

I'd say most have been listed and with their resumes...Pat Biserta had an excellent season...Anthony DeSclafani and A.J. Rusbarsky from Colts Neck are making a late charge...Craig Hughes from Wall - fine pitcher and hitter...

A team without great pitching is not much of a team!! All round players are a great asset to any team, but if you do not have a strong mound your team is doomed!Last time I checked allround players wins were not tracked. If all round players are so important why aren't there wins and losses reported !As we saw last week Slate is not a one skill player,if given the chance the boy will knock the laces off the ball!!!!!!!!

Just a couple of thoughts... who has been most consistent, most challenging and baseball "smart"?
Hmm?

im not dissing what you are saying and he did best with the chance he got at the plate. But if you really look at it he does carry his team by his pitching but PLAYER of the year is the best baseball player and look at the pros MVPs are never pitchers for a reason there the best athlete who puts up the best numbers and does the most of everything he can do for his team. Slate is a great pitcher, but is just a pitcher. I respect 11-0 and a non existent ERA, but your not going to change my mind on the skilled player who does everything, they make a team better by being there.

Well then ,I think it's time for a pitcher of the year!!Batter of the year ect.But since that is not an option ,I still think Slate has had the most impact for his team!

Im all for best player/hitter and best pitcher

Best "all around" player sounds like that player fits the roll of a 25 th man on a MLB team THEY CALL THEM UTILITY PLAYERS!!
Best athletic player sounds like a pinch runner...!!
Most impact on his team:
Slate with 11 wins so far, hugh impact for his team AND A GAME STOPPER
Winkofsky with 11 HR, 10 2b,
39 RBI, 24 BB, OT has won 24 games

Good BB players have good years. GREAT players put their team on their back and carry therm into June..just like Slate and Winkofsky

Pick a pitcher who you would want on the mound this year for just that one game
Pick a hitter you would want at the plate, last of the 7th, you're down by 2, runners at 1st & 2nd,
2 outs??? And be honest and give me YOUR IMPACT player for this AB
Sorry but Pt Boro, TRS,& Raritan are all watching this game & AB from the stands !!!

All of these 07 players mentioned are head and shoulders above the rest, Both Laufer Boys, Slate , Winkofsky, Beserta, Talerico, Zucchino, JC Menna, Renaudo, Hughes, Rubarski, whew what an all star team this is !!
Picking a POY in a normal year is a tough task much less in a year where anyone of 10 seniors are worthy. I think I have to go with which player has had the biggest impact on his team's success.
No Slate and CBA most likely isn't still playing.
No Winkofsky and Ocean doesn't win their usual 20 games
Zucchino carried his team for about 2 weeks but was hurt most of the year and not much of a factor early not the POY
Berserta was, well Berserta unfortunately he played on a bad Pt Boro team yet he managed to put together a nice season, nice seasons don't get you POY
Hughes again had a nice season, other than the early Ocean win nothing jumps out for POY
Either Laufer boy could stake his claim just based on their individual offensive output but neither can equal the Tuna's exploits in Ocean.
Talerico had a good solid year for a decent TRS team BUT they came up short too many time as did St Rose and RBC and their studs.
My dark horse here is AJ Rubarski Colts Neck who IS carrying his team as we speak, both in the field and at the plate, unfortunately his numbers for THE YEAR don't jump out at you
So it's back to SLATE and TUNA
How about CO-POY ??? or TRI-POY??
Just a thought !!!!

Tuna, Slate and Talerico... In that order. Tuna will probably win this award due to the fact that he broke the SC HR record. Slate had an outstanding season yet, the Colts fall short again for a state title. In my opinion, CBA should be in the MCT and SCT Championship games EVERY-YEAR. I think CBA's goal (as it is for every team) is to bring home a state title. All the "other" championships are to be expected.
Talerico had a great season for TRS. Some may want to put the Laufer twins here, however look at the difference between A-North and A-South. A HUGE drop off after CBA and Colts Neck in A-North. A-South had 4 teams in it that had 20+ plus wins. Just think of what teams like TRS, TRE, and Jackson would of done outside A-South. I believe Toms River South didnt lose to a team outside that division. Talerico is at the top of many offensive categories in the Shore.
