Marty Kenney records win No. 600
by1 STAFF REPORT
Marty Kenney wanted to create a program that could compare favorably to some of the high-powered ones at Christian Brothers Academy, like basketball, track and field and cross country.
Consider that done.
Kenney, who has been CBA's head baseball coach since 1974, recorded career win No. 600 Thursday night, when the Colts, ranked No. 2 in the Asbury Park Press Top 10, defeated No. 1 Wall, 5-2, in a nondivisional game.
Kenney (600-253) is the second baseball coach in the history of the Shore Conference to record 600 wins. Toms River South's Ken Frank with 655 wins is the Shore's all-time winningiest baseball coach.
""I was probably more eager to get to 500 because that was quite an accomplishment,'' Kenney said ""I told the players that 600 is just a number, and their answer was, "It's a big number'.
""To me it (600) represents a great deal of time and effort by all my assistant coaches and all the players who have gone through the program. It's an honor for me to accept this milestone on behalf of them.'
CBA has been a major part of Kenney's life. He said he has spent 41 of his 58 years at the school. He played both varsity baseball and basketball for three years at the school before graduating in 1966.
In addition to his baseball coaching duties, he was an assistant basketball coach to legendary coaches Vinnie Cox and Ed Wicelinski for a combined 20 seasons.
Under Kenney, CBA won the NJSIAA Non-Public A state championship in 1977 with a 2-1 win over Seton Hall Prep.
He said that is his best memory from his career because it was ""kind of unexpected''.
The Colts have also won four Shore Conference Tournament championships, all since 1992 and five NJSIAA Non-Public South A championships, four since 2001, under Kenney.
In Thursday night's game, Jim Laufer socked a solo home in the fifth and went 3-for-4 with three RBI. His brother, Dave, allowed two runs on four hits over five-plus innings and Mike Galeotafiore struck out three in two innings of relief to pick up the save and went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
