NJSIAA new classifications

NJSIAA releases new classifications

The Monsignor Donovan High School football team, if it can qualify for the NJSIAA playoffs this fall, will likely play one of the powers in New Jersey scholastic football.
The Griffins, who went 0-10 last year, will be classified as a Non-Public Group IV school for the 2007 season as the NJSIAA has released both its football and general group classifications for the 2007-08 school year.
Monsignor Donovan had been classified as a Non-Public Group III school in recent years and had qualified for the Non-Public Group III playoffs four times since 1993, with the last time coming in 2004. The Griffins went 0-4 in those playoff games.
Among the schools Monsignor Donovan could play in Non-Public Group IV are Don Bosco Prep, which has been ranked No.‚1 in the Gannett New Jersey Top 20 three of the last five seasons, including last year; St. Peter's Prep, which split two meetings with Don Bosco Prep in the Non-Public Group IV championship game the last two seasons and always strong Bergen Catholic.
With Monsignor Donovan moving up to Non-Public Group IV, Red Bank Catholic dropped down to Non-Public Group III and will compete against the likes of perennial power St. Joseph (Montvale), defending Non-Public Group III state champion Immaculata and Delbarton. The Caseys had qualified for the Non-Public Group IV playoffs each of the last three seasons, losing to Don Bosco Prep, Camden Catholic and Seton Hall Prep.
Another significant football group change will see Barnegat, which qualified for the South Jersey Group I playoffs last year in its first year as a varsity program, moving up to South Jersey Group II now that it has students grades 9-12 enrolled at the school.
Also, Jackson Liberty, which is expected to play an independent varsity schedule this fall before it joins the Shore Conference in 2008, has been classified as a South Jersey Group II school for football.

Significant changes in the general classification, which covers basketball, baseball, softball, soccer and tennis, will see Point Pleasant Boro move over to Central Jersey Group III from South Jersey Group II; Middletown South and Holmdel both move into Central Jersey Group III from North II, Group III and Allentown drop down to Central Jersey Group II from Central Jersey Group III.
