Bernie Goldwater

The former Freehold Township High School baseball coach passed away at the age of 74 Thursday in Florida according to Bob McGirr, owner of the Clayton and McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township.

McGirr said the funeral will be there 11 a.m. Monday.

Bernie won 331 games, 12th most in Shore Conference history. Bernie's victories include the 1986 NJSIAA Group III championship and the 1985 Shore Conference championship.

Bernie was also an athletic director at Freehold Township and Howell High Schools.

""Bernie was synonymous with Freehold Township High School and was widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the Shore,'' said 12th year Patriots coach Frank Gualtieri.

""Bernie always spoke his mind and fought for what he thought was right,'' said Gualtieri. ""He was old school and gave nobody any quarter. A guy like that is missed. His track record speaks for itself.''

All Due respect to this coach that many admired, and the dust not settled; but business must go on. Maybe Ocean's Delpra would be a good replacement as I have heard he has been looking for a change the last two years involving an AD position. Has to support three little boys. Tony, would this be a consideration?

Del would be a good replacement for?

As for becoming an AD/administrator that's always a possibility as coaches get older.

Del is so involved in Ocean baseball....it's hard for me to envision him moving "Up" if the job would mandate leaving coaching...but I could also see it happening for the reasons you state..

Next time I chat with him I will ask...
