GAME REPORTS

by1 STAFF REPORT
It was a special day for the long dormant Neptune High School baseball program.
""We can turn the page, and can now it to the next level,'' said Scarlet Fliers' seventh-year head coach Bob Huzzy after his team clinched a berth in the NJSIAA Tournament with a wild 14-10 win over Red Bank Regional Friday in a non-divisional game.
According to Huzzy, it is Neptune's first state tournament berth since 1995, when current boys basketball coach Ken O'Donnell was the head coach.
Teams had to be at least .500 by the end of play Friday to qualify for the state tournament. Neptune is 10-10.
""We have fought through a lot of adversity the whole year,'' Huzzy said. ""To do it (qualify) on the last day makes it very special.''
Senior Bryan Toohey, who has been with the Scarlet Fliers' varsity for three years, had a special day as he went 4-for-5 with a three-run home run in the sixth that extended Neptune's lead to 14-5. He wound up with four RBI, scored three runs and picked up his sixth win of the season by fighting his way through the first six innings.
""I can't say enough about this kid,'' Huzzy said. ""He does something different every day to make himself better. He's a true leader.''
Senior Chris Sibole went 3-for-5 with a three-run double in an eight-run fourth inning that wiped out a 5-3 deficit. Brandon Lewis was 2-for-2 and two runs scored.
Tim Johnson slugged a two-run homer for Red Bank (4-14).

MANASQUAN 7, HOWELL 6: Alex Otchy's sacrifice fly to center in the bottom of the sixth inning scored Brendan Leehan with the go-ahead run and capped a rally from a 6-0 deficit after 21/2 innings as the Warriors (10-10) edged the Rebels (9-12) and qualified for the NJSIAA Tournament.
""We've been pretty good at not giving up,'' said Manasquan coach Art Gordon, whose team lost to Wall, 9-8, and Point Boro, 5-3, earlier this week to put itself on the state tournament bubble. ""We shoot ourselves in the foot a lot, but then we find a way to bandage ourselves and fight back. This sort of keeps whatever sanity I have left.''
Leehan had delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded earlier in the sixth, with a third run scoring on an error on the same play. Leehan, who moved to second on the error on his single, advanced to third on a wild pitch before Otchy's sacrfice fly.
A.J. Miller had an RBI triple in the fifth to pull Manasquan within, 6-3, and Leehan had a run-scoring single in the third, when the Warriors scored their first two runs.
Brian Battaglia went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and Frank Ozello had a run-scoring single and two runs scored on an error in a five-run third for Howell, which likely saw its hopes of qualifying for the Shore Conference Tournament evaporate. Teams have to be .500 after Monday afternoon's games to qualify for the SCT.

MIDDLETOWN NORTH 5, HOLMDEL 4: An RBI single by senior Chris Rotolo (3-for-4) tied the score and Mike Carlino's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh capped a two-run rally that sent the Lions (10-10) into the NJSIAA Tournament via a nondivision win over the Hornets (8-11).
North also defeated Holmdel in 2006 on the final qualifying day to advance to the postmseason.
Sean Byrnes (two runs scored) and Carlino each had two hits for North.
Chris Monfasani had two hits including a two-run double for Holmdel which gave it a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning.
Mike Collison was the winnner in relief for North pitching a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
