GAME REPORTS

COLTS NECK 10, MIDDLETOWN NORTH 0:
The Colts Neck High School baseball team is in the midst of a big week.
But, one would not know that by looking at the Cougars' players.
""They've been loose all week,'' said Colts Neck coach Mike Yorke. ""They've been laughing on the bus. They weren't stressed at all (Tuesday). Their confidence level is high and they are comfortable with each other. That's what's important.''
Colts Neck has easily cleared the first two hurdles of a week that will see it play six games in seven days.
It can clinch a tie for both the Class A North overall and public school championships Wednesday with a win at Christian Brothers Academy after it rolled to a 10-0 victory over Middletown North yesterday behind a one-hitter by junior right-hander Anthony DeSclafani.
""Somebody asked me how many in a row we have won, and all we keep saying is we've won one in a row,'' said Yorke, whose team has won six straight and is 11-3 overall and 9-2 in Class A North after wins over Manalapan and Middletown North the last two days.
""Sometimes, we as coaches tend to put a little too much pressure on the kids. These kids are handling it well.''
DeSclafani struck out nine, walked one and allowed just a single in the second inning.
Senior shortstop A.J. Rusbarsky went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Dom Hayes, Joe DeNora and Mickey Shaw all had two hits and Ethan Jackson stroked a two-run double in the fourth. Seven different players had RBI as the Cougars avenged an earlier 4-0 loss to Middletown North.

Turnaround is fair play, as far as the Freehold Township High School baseball team is concerned.

Last year, Middletown North temporarily delayed the Patriots Shore Conference Class A Noth public division championship celebration.

Monday, Freehold Township knocked the Lions out of first place in the division with an 8-2 victory.

""That (Middletown North delaying Freehold Township's title celebration) was in the back of our minds,'' said Freehold Township coach Frank Gualtieri said.

Todd Frazier sets Rutgers' homer records

BY STEVEN FALK

Add another major accom
plishment for Todd Frazier.

Frazier, Rutgers Universi
ty's junior All-America shortstop and a former Toms River
High School South and Toms
River East American Little
League standout, set Rutgers'
all-time career and season
home run records Saturday
with a two-run run homer in
the bottom of the seventh in
ning of the first game of the
Scarlet Knights' home Big
East Conference doublehead
er against Notre Dame.

With his 15th homer of the
season and 35th of his career,
Frazier broke the old records
for a season set by teammate
Frank Meade and for
a career set by his older
brother, Jeff.

Frank Meade hit 14 homers
last year. Jeff Frazier, who
was a third-round draft
choice of the Detroit Tigers in

High School baseball notebook for 4/28

BY TONY
GRAHAM

STAFF WRITER

One reason the Shore
Challenge has become such a
success, according to director
Bart McInerney, is the respect
coaches have state-wide for lo
cal high school baseball.

""I just think the original idea
was for this to be a showcase
for players and it's grown to
the point where Shore Confer
ence baseball is that good, that
out of area teams are lining up
to play in the Shore Chal
lenge,'' said McInerney.

The brain child of McInerney,
coach at St. Rose, the fourth
annual event begins Saturday
with six games, two at the
Shore Christian Academy and
four at FirstEnergy Park, the
home of the Lakewood Blue
Claws. It continues Sunday and
next weekend and concludes
May 12.

NJSIAA scheduling limitations
preclude turning the event into
a formal tournament but that
hasn't stopped the Challenge
from growing every year.

Some 24 Shore Conference
teams will play generally at
least one or two games, facing
usually highly regarded oppo
nents from around New Jersey.
At least three local teams, St.
Rose, CBA and St. John Vian
ney, are scheduled to play
three.

""We started with 14 teams and
now we have 52,'' said McIner
ney. ""The problem with it is
that we have a limited amount
of Shore teams. Right now I
have seven or more teams that
want to play but there aren't
enough Shore teams.''

That being said, McInerney en
visions the field swelling to
over 60 teams for 2008.

Games are played at some of
the Shore's finest facilities
which also include the Wall
Municipal Complex, Raider Ra
vine at Toms River East, and
Christian Brothers Academy.

McInerney concedes almost ev
ery team wants to take the field
at FirstEnergy Park but it can
only host so many games.

""We're playing 16 games at the
BlueClaws and they've been
nothing but gracious hosts,''
said McInerney. ""This is not a
profit-making thing.''

McInerney said each team receives 20 Shore Challenge
T-shirts and a most valuable
player is selected from each
game.

McInerney said Shore teams
went 16-12 last season, 10-8 in
2005, and 8-4 the first year.

Commotion in Ocean

Keith Weinkofsky's two
home runs Thursday may be
the additional spark for the ex
pected Ocean long-ball barrage.
Ocean had not gone deep this
spring until Eric Hinkle con
nected Tuesday and as a team
has now homered in three
games in a row.

Weinkofsky did not hit his
first home run in 2006 until
April 30 and went on to hit 11
between then and the June 10
Group III final with Morris
town. His 21 career home runs
are six behind the Shore
Conference career record 27
slugged by Jackson's Marc
Fink (1994).

Weinkofsky is batting .343
with five doubles, and five of
his eight walks have been in
tentional.

A Howell of a week

""I guess this was the most
emotionally draining week of
my life coaching baseball,'' said
Howell coach Bill Gallacher.

Tuesday Howell scored 10
runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to shock Middletown South, 18-17.

Thursday Howell took a 9-5
lead into the last of the seventh
at Manalapan and lost 11-9 on
sophomore Ryan Harvey's first
varsity home run, a three-run
shot.

""I felt like we had a steam
train going (against Middletown South),'' said Gallacher.
""That's how I felt Thursday but
from the other side.''

In its erratic season, on April
13 Howell defeated CBA for the
first time since 1999. The next
day it was defeated 16-5 by
Colts Neck.

Said Gallacher, ""I told (Colts
Neck coach) Mike Yorke, "I was
on Cloud Nine for 12 hours and
for six of those hours I was
sleeping.' ''

Tales of the Titans

""I feel we have the most inconsistant club at the Shore,'' said Brian Kmak, coach
of Keansburg (5-6).

""We play a great game against St. Rose, have a chance to win in the bototm of the
severth, and the next day make eight errors against Shore and get 10-run ruled.

""We have the same team that lost in the (NJSIAA) CJ I final last year and we've been
struggling. It's a puzzler.''

GAME REPORTS

by1 STAFF REPORT

Southern Regional's first-year head coach Dennis Pidgeon wanted to get a message across to his team after what he thought was a listless performances in its loss to Monsignor Donovan Saturday morning.

""I said, 'I've tried to be a father figure, tried to treat them like my sons, tried to to disciplined them and tried to coddle them, and I wasn't getting effect from them,' '' Pidgeon said. ""I just said, come back after the break, relax, play the game and have fun.' ''

The Rams had a lot more fun Saturday afternoon. Senior right-hander Devon Cocuzza scattered six hits and struck out eight to pick up his first win of the season and drove in both his team's runs as Southern upended Jackson, ranked No. 4 in the Asbury Park Press Top 10, 2-1, in a Shore Conference Class A South game.

Southern (4-7, 4-6), which defeated Toms River South earlier this season, snapped a three-game losing streak. It was the second straight loss for Jackson (10-4, 7-4) and dealt a severe blow to its chances of winning the Class A South title.

The Rams broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth. Darren Schneberg led off with a single. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Schmidt and scored on Cocuzza's double.

The same trio played a hand in Southern's tying run in the fourth as Schneberg and Schmidt singled and Schneberg scored on Cocuzza's single.

Ryan Guarino had an RBI single in the fourth for Jackson.

Shore Regional senior Bill Cerruti had his strikeout pitches working Saturday.

The left-hander struck out 12 and hurled a two-hitter as the Blue Devils defeated Neptune in a first round game of the Monmouth County Tournament, 4-1.

Shore (10-1) will host Raritan (5-5) in a quarterfinal game tentatively scheduled for Friday. It is off to its best start since 1998 when it won its first nine games.

""Cerruti was tremendous,'' said coach Jeff Karpell of Shore. ""He had command of all three pitches, his fastball, changeup, and curveball.

""In the one inning when they scored, it was an unearned run, they had second and third and one out, and one was all they got. He's quite a competitor.''

A sacrifice fly by Rom Somers, a two-run single by Shawn Metz, and an RBI single by Todd Juliano (2-for-3) provided Cerruti all the runs he would need in the first inning.

Tom Juliano added two hits for Shore.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

LIONS ROAR to NO-HIT WIN

What pitcher Kevin Engelbrecht of Middletown North started for five innings against Middletown South Thursday Mike Collison finished.

What Collison finished was a no-hitter as the Lions (8-5, 8-2) slipped into first place ahead of idle Colts Neck in Shore Conference Class A North with a 5-0 victory over the Eagles (2-11, 1-9) at First Energy Park, Lakewood.
North is scheduled to host Colts Neck (9-3, 7-2) Friday, however rain is in the forecast.
The game Thursday also doubled as the Rich-Veth Walter Woods Memorial Cup game named for the former coaching icons of Middletown high school basebvall.

Engelebrecht pitched five inning striking out five and walking one.

""We had to take him out after that because of pitching restrictions,'' said North coach Jon Scala.

""It was one of those things where we concentrated on getting three outs in the last inning more than the no-hitter.''

A ground ball to short ended Collison's stint in which he struck out two and walked none. Two batters reached vs. Collison on errors.

Kevin Mager and Jim Trancucci each had had two hits including RBI doubles in the fifth inning when North took a 3-0 lead.

North has won three games in a row pulling out of a four-game skid.

""We reached a dark place with those four games,'' said Scala. ""But there's a lot of maturity and seniors on the team.

""We knew going into Friday (vs. Colts Neck) we had to win these three games this week.''

Scala said senior right-hander Sean Byrnes (2-1) will start Friday vs. the Cougars.

TR North takes control in Class A South

By JOE ADELIZZISTAFF WRITER

JACKSON - For those who think Toms River North has climbed to the top of Shore

Conference Class A South by using mirrors, they are wrong. It has been the Dipsey

Doodle, it seems.

At least that is what pitcher Chad Geran had going for him Wednesday as the Mariners

took a giant step toward the division crown with a 5-1 victory against Jackson.

""He has three pitches, no make that four,'' said winning coach Ted Schelmay,

explaining the success his senior right-hander has enjoyed compiling a 3-0 record.

""Fastball, curve and change-up .‚.‚. and the other one,'' added Schelmay, refusing

to say what the mystery pitch is. ""Call it a Dipsey Doodle.''

Whatever it is, it fit in perfectly with the fastball and curve Wednesday to keep

Geran ahead of the Jackson hitters.

""Down and outside. That's where I wanted the ball,'' said Geran, who allowed four

hits. ""Against that team (Jackson) you get the ball up and they'll hit it. When I got

it up today they slammed hard line drives. My defense was there.''

The Mariners have been riding a crest of success since losing their season opener to

Toms River South. They are now 9-2 overall, 8-1 in A South. Jackson is now 7-3 in the

division.

""We just didn't hit that day,'' Schelmay said of the opener. ""But since then we

have been doing things right, playing good baseball.''

But the days of sneaking up on teams are over.

""No one thought much about us when the season started,'' Geran said. ""And they had

no reason to based on last season (12-12). But we believed.

""Now, we like being the team everyone hates. We want to keep going.''

If they continue to get the offense they showed against Jackson, championships will

fall into place.

The Mariners have already swept the Jags and Toms River East, one of the preseason

favorites in A South.

And they are doing it with a pair of sophomore bats, known to teammates as the Bash

Brothers, Billy Hoermann and Steve Nyisztor. They combined for five hits and drove home

three of the runs for the Mariners.

Hoermann had a pair of doubles and looked unstoppable at the plate.

""He played some as a freshman. He had a home run as a designated hitter,'' Schelmay

said.

Hoermann understands there are plenty of A South games remaining, but he knows what

the Mariners have to do.

""If we win out, no one can take the championship from us,'' said the 6-foot-6 first

baseman, who has been leading the Mariners offense in recent weeks, including a

game-winning home run against Toms River South in their rematch with the Indians.

""It's nice having guys on your team who can hit like that,'' Geran said of the Bash

Brothers.

They were among the key players in North's four-run third inning. C.J. Alonso led off

with a double. Mike LaCava had an infield hit and Anthony Mazzetta singled in the first

run. Hoermann followed with a rope to the left-field corner. Nyisztor had a sac fly and

then Hoermann scored when Scott Shan struck out, but the ball got past the catcher and

the throw to first sailed to right field.

The Jags scored a run in the fourth with the help of an error and a double. But after

that, it was all Dipsey Doodle for the Mariners.

""It's my own pitch,'' Geran said. ""Let's just say it keeps batters off balance.''

Let's just say it has the Mariners where no one expected them to be, alone at the top

of Class A South.

no-hit wonder for St. Rose

by1 STAFF REPORT

BART MCINERNEY doesn't hestitate for a moment when you ask him if Anthony Ranaudo is the best pitcher he's seen at St. Rose.

""I've been here 13 years and no one is close. You almost expect every game that he can throw a no-hitter. He's that good,'' said McInerney.

And he was that good Wednesday, throwing his first no-hitter of the season and striking out 14 as the Purple Roses defetaed Point Pleasant Becah, 2-0.

""They had a walk and another guy reached on an error in the first inning. He pitched out of that,'' said McInerney. ""Then he got into a rhythm he struck out the side in the second, third and fifth innings.''

Chris Bresnahan scored both St. Rose runs. The first on a single by Vin Vinci and the second on a sac fly by John McGrath.

Ranaudo had a one-hitter last week against St.Peter's.

""It's probably unfair to him. We expect him to dominate every time he's out there,'' said McInerney.

""But we have a long wya to go,and we can't pitch the horse every game,'' he said.

St. Rose, now 8-0, 7-0 in Class B Central, will face Ramapa in the Shore Challenge this week.

Senior Colin Trautman allowed only two hits for the Gulls who fell to 7-6, 4-5 in the division.

Latest on "the Wiz: full story, reaction from Billet, Kenny, Crotty, successor possibilities

By TONY GRAHAM
STAFF WRITER
MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP - The man they have called "Coach Wiz' for four decades is no longer coaching.

Ed Wicelinski Tuesday announced he is retiring as basketball coach at Christian Brothers Academy after what he termed ""27 memory filled but none the less stressful seasons.''

Wicelinski coached freshman basketball at CBA under Vinnie Cox beginning in the early
1970's before becoming head man in 1980-81.

Tuesday, dressed in a tan golf shirt embroidered with the letters CBA, Wicelinski
sat down with two reporters at lunch to make public the end of a brilliant career.

Taking over for Cox, a legend in his own right, the program flourished and grew under Wicelinski.

""The Wiz" won 625 games, believed to be the most by any coach at one Shore area high school, and captured an impressive range of championships from Shore Conference Tournaments to NJSIAA titles, as well as a ton of Shore Conference divisional crows.

""On the mental side I say to myself, "It's time,' '' said Wicelinski, 58. He also
said he ended the last two seasons "'physically ill.''

But he said leaving coaching will not be easy. ""I know there'll be
days when I'm going to doubt whether I'm doing the right thing,'' he said. """But from
an intellectual point of view I think it's the right thing to do for me and my family.''

He said his wife, Virginia, had said for the first time they'll enjoy what he termed a ""normal"' Thanksgiving and Christmas.

""Every Thanksgiving has been followed by two a days (practices), Fridays, Saturdays,
and Sundays.'' And then, he said, there were the annual post Christmas departures for
holiday tournaments.

Wicelinski said he's recommended interviews for the job for freshman coach and
former player Mike Wheeler and junior varsity coach Chris Kane. He said they have
already applied for the position.

Bill Hazelton, long-time CBA varsity assistant, a former head coach at Union High School, said he was not lobbying for the job but was ""sitting back and watching.''

Kevin Boyle, who coached St. Patrick's of Elizabeth to the last two NJSIAA
Tournament of Champions titles, is said to have expressed interest in CBA were the job
to open.

Former CBA star Geoff Billet, Seton Hall first-year assistant coach, said Wicelinski
was the best coach he ever played for.

""If I'm ever a head coach I would definitely use the practices, the preparation, and
everything we did at CBA as my main point of reference,'' said Billet.

""The CBA job is a great job and any alumnus of the school would be honored to be the
basketball coach there.''

Chris Kenny, Monmouth University first-year assistant coach who led CBA to a 27-1
record in 2001, said he could not envision himself getting involved. ""But I wouldn't
turn them down flat out,'' he said.

John Przygocki, CBA athletic director, promised a speedy resolution. He said he hoped
the new coach would be named by the conclusion of the current school year.

Wicelinski said only twice in the last 27 years had he considered leaving CBA. He said early in his career he turned down Brookdale Community College and later was interviewed for the Manhattan job when the Jaspers hired Steve Lappas.

Kenny said he was not surprised by the Tuesday announcement. ""You could kind of see
(this season) he was getting worn out on the bench,''s aid Kenny.

""When I told him after last season I was getting into coaching he started to ask me
who I think would be the better fit to replace him. So once he started asking me about
that stuff I knew he was thinking about trying to find someone to replace him.

""If I was going to coach he was probably my biggest influence,'' said Kenny. ""He's
"Coach Wiz.''

The news, however, ""shocked"" former CBA great John Crotty. ""He's been almost an
institution over there,'' said the former star guard from 1984-87.

Crotty went on to play college basketball at the University of Virginia before
spending 13 years in the NBA. He is currently a radio analyst for the Miami Heat of the
NBA.

""When you think of CBA basketball you definitely think of him and Vinnie Cox and all the tradition we've had there,'' said Crotty Tuesday. ""And a lot of that can be attributed to Coach Wiz.''

Crotty said he remembered Wicelinski for his intense practices. ""He's got me to
practice at an even higher level,'' Crotty said. ""I think he prepared me for college as
much as any coach could. He was running college practices in high school.''

Kenny said Wicelinski's value to him was more than a coach. ""I kind of structure my whole life after the guy,''said Kenny. ""He always talked
about organization and being disciplined. I kind of map my day out and he would make us
do that in health class.

Wicelinski informed his players of his decision Tuesday afternoon. ""We didn't
really have any idea anything was up,'' said Mike Kuhn, who will be a senior point guard
in 2007-2008.

He said the Colts had no favorites for a successor. ""No matter who the coach is
we're just going to continue to play smart basketball.''

""I hope I was fair (as a coach), we tried to be,'' said Wicelinski. ""We tried to
be teachers. Our goal was always to be better at the end of the year that we were at the
beginning.''

Crotty said Wicelinski's successor has his work cut out for him.

""Whoever gets the job has an awesome responsibility following in the foot steps of
Coach Wiz,'' Crotty said.

Wicelinski said he plans continue to teach health and physical education at CBA and
run his summer basketball camps.
