Manasquan O-lineman Art Forst commits to Rutgers

By KEITH SARGEANT
STAFF WRITER
Art Forst wanted to wait before committing to the college football team of his choice. The original plan, the Manasquan High School rising senior lineman said, was to take five official campus visits before finalizing his decision.
But a funny thing happened when he evaluated the decision this past weekend.
"Honestly, I didn't see myself at any school other than Rutgers,'' said Forst, who notified Scarlet Knights football coach Greg Schiano late Saturday evening of his decision to join the Scarlet Knights' incoming 2008 recruiting class.
Forst, a 6-foot-8, 305-pound offensive tackle, chose Rutgers over more than a dozen scholarship offers. But ultimately, he said, he didn't want to string out the other schools that sought his service namely defending national champion Florida and Notre Dame.
""Basically I didn't want to waste the University of Florida's and Notre Dame's time anymore,'' said Forst, a four star (out of five) prospect according to scout.com and rivals.com and a consensus top-5 New Jersey recruit. ""I thought the world of Notre Dame's coaches, especially (offensive line) Coach Latina. I just didn't see myself at Notre Dame.''
Forst is believed to be one of Schiano's top targets in the '08 class. He's the seventh recruit to pledge, and he joins a group that's shaping up to be even better than Rutgers' consensus top-30 class of this year.
""I know they brought in a lot of quality linemen this past recruiting class,'' Forst said. ""I think one trait I have is the desire to not let anyone outwork me. I'm not going to shy away from hard work.
Forst said he envisions the day when he's bookending Anthony Davis, the highly-touted lineman from Piscataway who will join the Scarlet Knights when they report to camp this Thursday, on Rutgers' offensive line in the future.
""Coach Schiano, when he was recruiting me, said something interesting,'' Forst said. ""He told me when he was at Miami, the most grueling day of the week wasn't Saturday. It was Tuesdays and Wednesdays because there was so much depth and the second and third teams were a lot times as good as the teams they were playing.''
For now, Forst is looking forward to the start of Manasquan's camp on Aug. 13.
""We're going to be very good this year,'' he said.

Future/present Freehold Township HS players win senior section baseball title/future remains bright for Patriots

My question..this is senior legion ball is it not??? Just curious??

SENIOR LEAGUE: FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP 7, BRICK AMERICAN 2
Freehold Township wins Section 3 title
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 07/25/07

STAFF REPORT

The Freehold Township Senior League baseball team continued its winning ways by downing Brick American 7-2 at Old Bridge Little League Field on Tuesday to capture the Section 3 championship.
After Chris Ballester's single in the bottom of the fifth inning gave Freehold Township a 3-2 lead, the team then tacked on four more runs in the inning to seal the victory for the District 19 champs.
Tom Wojciechowski doubled in two runs and Bryan Gillis connected on a two-RBI single for Freehold Township. Pitcher Anthony Cirillo Jr. did not allow a run in the sixth or seventh innings for the victory.
"We came into the game very confident and relaxed tonight," Freehold Township manager Anthony Cirillo Sr. said.
"We knew that we had the edge just because we had to lose two in a row to get eliminated. Our confidence and sound defensive play carried us to a victory tonight."
The core of the Freehold Township team has already achieved a great deal of success when it went to Bristol, Conn., as 12-year-olds as New Jersey state champs, and again when it won the Junior League (13-14) Eastern Regionals and earned a trip to the World Series in Taylor, Mich.
"Five of my boys have lost only one district game since they've been 12 years old," Cirillo said. "I like our chances advancing on. We have an experienced group that knows what it takes to win."
Freehold Township will now take on Section 4 champion North Cumberland in the Senior League state tournament at 8:15 p.m. in South Vineland on Friday

Ranaudo ""99 percent" to LSU

I just talked to St. Rose graduate and LSU signee Anthony Ranaudo, drafted in the 11th round by Texas in June ..

""Let's put it this way, I'm packing all my clothes for LSU,'' said Ranaudo. ""I'm doing all my orientation, I've paid all my book fees, and am getting ready to go down there.

""It's probably 99 percent sure I'm going down to school. There's always that one per cent - that if the Rangers called up and offered me a certain amount of money - then all of a sudden my life's changed.''

I asked Ranaudo if he had talked to CBA grad Kyle Slate, a 37th round draft pick of the Phillies. Ranaudo said, "I talked to Kyle a week ago, I think he's going to wind up going to school (U of Maine), hopefully come out a lot stronger three years from now, and be a high draft pick three years from now.''

I have no news on status of JC Menna (RBC), 39th round by Pittsburgh, signed with James Madison.

Remember...major league teams have until Aug. 15 to sign their players, otherwise they go back into the draft. All three of our players have signed with four-year `schools, so if they go the college route (as Todd Frazier did), they would not be draft eligible again until after their junior years.

Billet to CBA? - Rumors in high gear!!..Nothing official but it appears it's going to happen

Those long bandied about rumors about Geoff returning to CBA have reached a peak this weekend..below are blog entries from NJ Gannett Seton Hall men's basketball beat writer Jerry Carino and writer J.P. Pelzman of the Record who is departing the SHU beat to take over the Jets...

As of this morning I called CBA athletic director AD John Przygocki and left a message which so far has not been returned. I did speak to John yesterday (Friday) and he said there was "nothing to report."

John has been very good about all this and - he probably cannot speak without approval from his bosses and I under stand that...

This morning I talked with former coach Ed Wicelinski who basically said he has not been part of the hiring processs.

As for those camps everyone speaks of - which he owns - not CBA - he said - "since no head coach has beeen announced I haven't made arrangements with any one. "

Oh yes - I also called Billet and he has not returned my call as we speak..

From Carino's blog -

It's circulated from the message boards to the blogosphere and, now, into common knowledge: Seton Hall assistant Geoff Billet is leaving the college coaching ranks to take over the varsity program at his alma mater, Christian Brothers Academy. This has been the subject of speculation for several weeks, during which time Billet brushed aside the rumors, but it appears as though a change in circumstances over the last 72 hours prompted him to pull the trigger. I refer you to fellow scribe J.P. Pelzman of The Record, who is leaving the Seton Hall beat to take over New York Jets coverage for his paper and goes out with a bang here: http://njmg.typepad.com/pelz/.....

As for Billet, this is a big loss for Seton Hall. Geoff was the program's New Jersey recruiter and he was starting to build up some big-time momentum, as evidenced by his successful courtship of Mike Davis and Jordan Theodore. He's also a good guy who is well-liked by everyone who deals with him. Best of luck to Geoff as he returns to his roots.

This from the blog of J.P. Pelzman of the Bergen Record:

Seton Hall men's basketball assistant coach Geoff Billet is leaving the program, according to sources close to the situation. Billet will become the boys basketball coach at his alma mater, Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft.

People in the know had talked of this potential move by Billet since early June, yet through sources, Billet had issued repeated denials. But from what I understand, a deal for him to also run CBA's basketball camp was constructed, making the job more feasible for Billet from a monetary standpoint...

Billet back ground from me::

The former CBA star played his college ball at Rutgers, later served as an assistant coach for one year at Rutgers, for five years at Monmouth, and spent last season as an assistant at Seton Hall.

There has been wide spread speculation since Wicelinski retired in April that Billet would land the CBA job if he decided to leave the college ranks.

At Monmouth, under Dave Calloway, Billet helped guide the Hawks to two Northeast Conference championships, and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2004 and 2006. A 1999 graduate of Rutgers, the sharp shooting guard finished his career with the Scarlet Knights ranked in the Top 10 in scoring with 1,480 career points.

Billet was an all-state selection while playing for CBA and Billet would step into big shoes at CBA....

Wicelinski's run that began in 1980-81 marked a career record of 625-116, one of the highest totals compiled by a Shore Conference coach at one high school.
He won 14 Shore Conference Tournaments and appeared in 20 of 25 championship games. CBA was also also prominent in NJSIAA Non-Public A competition. It won state championships in 1984, '85 and '95 and nine South Non-Public A sectional titles.

My personal though certainly unofficial take - while this is still rumor and speculation it is going to happen. That's my opinion.

Too many people have too many sources which are leading them to these conclusions.

If CBA was going to appoint a coach other than Geoff it certainly would have done so by now. That's s only common sense.

I believe there are some contractual obligations involving Billet and SHU that have to be fulfilled before anyone can make an announcement....

Illness forces Manasquan 's Vic Kubu not to coach football this season/Assistant Pete Cahill to run the Warriors in '07

Since this is a blog - I don't mind telling everyone it was with a great deal of personal concern and sadness that I wrote this story this evening.....

By TONY GRAHAM
STAFF WRITER
Vic Kubu, one of the most successful high school football coaches in the history of the Shore Conference, said Thursday he will take a leave of absence from leading Manasquan this season.
Kubu, who turned 65 in April, has under gone two surgeries in the last year for pancreatic cancer according to Dr. Patrick Buddle, Wall, his personal physician.
Dr. Buddle said during the second surgery in January at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick the tumor and a good portion of Kubu's pancreas were removed during a 12-hour operation.
Dr. Buddle said Kubu is currently suffering from recurring infections, malnutrition, and chronic Ascides, an accumulation of fliud within the abdominal cavity.
He said the coach is showing signs of progresses. ""He's had no fever over the last four or five days and the white cell count, which is an indication of infection has gone downward.""
""Right now I'm very weak, have a hard time walking,'' said Kubu Thursday by cell phonefrom his hospital bed at Jersey Shore Medical Center where he said he's spent the last twoweeks.
Dr. Buddle said Kubu has now been admitted ""four or five times"" at Jersey Shore since January because of the infections.
"'I'm going to try and help out (this season) as much as possible,'' said Kubu. ""Right now I'm not ready to coach. I've got a lot of infections and can't get rid of them. Now those things could go away in a week. Who knows?''
Kubu's 263 victories rank second among active Shore Conference coaches to Warren Wolf of Brick Township who has 350. Kubu said long time assistant Pete Cahill will act as Manasquan's interim coach this season.
Dr. Buddle said Kubu was diagnosed last spring. ""After he recovered from the (first) surgery, when they couldn't take the tumor out, he proceded though chemothearpy and radiation therapy which actually went though during last season.''
Manasquan went 12-0 last season, winning a Shore Conference record 10th New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association sectional championship. It defeated West Deptford, 28-0, in the 2006 South Jersey Group II final.
Kubu, though he did not coach from the sidelines in 2006, guided the team from press boxes where he remained in touch with his assistant coaches via head phones.
Four members of that team, graduated seniors Ed Kirschenbaum, Jim Sullivan, Evan Ragan, and Alex Iachetta, this week have been wearing wrist bands and helmet stickers bearing Kubu's name at practices for Friday's Shore 44 all-star game.
""I can't explain how much respect we have for the guy,'' said Kirschenbaum before Thursday evening's practice. ""That's (stickers, wrist bands), that's only a small, little thing we can do for him,'' he said.
"'He was always like the big guy, always around everything, a very inspiring man.''
Kirschenbaum said he's optimistic Kubu will overcome the adveristy. ""He's the toughest guy I know,''said Kirschenbaum. ""He can beat anything. I definitely hope the best for him, and I believe he will (get better).''
Sullivan said the former Manasquan players will have added incentive for Friday's game. ""We're going to try and win this game for him, try and boost his spirts up,'' said Sullivan who has a football scholarship to Monmouth University.
''Whenever Manasquan kids go out and win games it makes him happy on the inside,'' Sullivan said. We'll try and give him a good start for next season. We know if Manasquan High School is good next year it'll help him out a lot.''
Under Kubu since 1985 the Warriors have also won or shared 14 Shore Conference division titles.
A 1960 Manasquan graduate Kubu had returned to his alma mater from Middletown North where he coached the Lions for 10 years, including an 11-0 Central Jersey Group IV championship in 1983 led by current Wall coach Chris Barnes. Prior to that Kubu served nine years as an assisatant to Wolf.
"'In typical fashion he (Kubu) keeps asking me, "What's the game plan?' Dr. Buddle said. ""My goal and Victor's goal are to get him back in good health and back on the football field.''
Manasquan will take a 19-game winning streak into the 2007 season.

Central Reg. names new baseball coach

Central Regional Athletic Director Vincent Casale confirmed on Thursday night that John Scran will be the new head baseball coach for the Golden Eagles for the 2008 season. Previously, Scran was the school district's middle school baseball coach for the last four years.
""I want to thank the Board of Education and the adminstration for putting the trust in me,'' Scran said. ""I'm looking to get us back on track and get us competitive and play some fundamentally sound baseball.''
Scran is a former first baseman at Toms River East and he also played at Ocean County College.
Central, which was noted for championship teams when the late Al Kunzman was coaching the Leiter brothers, was 4-14-1 last season, 4-8 in Shore Conference Class B South.

Todd Frazier update: hits game-tying single in 12th inning Friday

Frazier update::

Todd Frazier and Jason Bour delivered RBI singles in the bottom of the 12th inning as Billings outlasted Orem, 6-5, on Friday.

After Jay Brossman's grounded into a run-scoring fielder's choice in the top of the 12th, the Mustangs (10-14) put together a game-winning rally.

Brandon Menchaca stroked a one-out single and stole second before scoring on Frazier's two-out base hit to center field. Brandon Waring walked before Bour ripped a single to left off Tremayne Holland.

Dan Zeffiro (1-1) picked up the win, despite yielding a run on a hit with two strikeouts in the 12th.

Jeremy Moore hit a solo homer, his fourth, and Brossman drove in three runs for the Owlz (13-11).

Former RU, TR South star, hopes to reach majors " in two to three years

Todd Frazier said the pace of life is generally slow in Billings, Montana, home of the Pioneer League rookie affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.
""Everything is low key,'' said Frazier Thursday.
But it's still been a busy week for the former Rutgers junior All-America shortstop and Toms River High School South graduate who was selected by Cincinnati with the 34th overall pick in the 2007 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft last month.
""A lot of mountains (around Billings),'' said Frazier who signed last week with Cincinnati for $825,000. ""I've got a new cell phone, I've just been doing little things,'' he said. "'I'm moving in with my host family tomorrow (Friday) and I'm just living out of a hotel right now.""
Frazier said he arrives at venerable Cobb Field, the home of the Mustangs since 1948, around mid morning. ""And leave at 10:30,'' he said. ""It's non-stop baseball every day.''
The all-time home run leader at Rutgers (42) and Toms River South (26), Frazier delivered an RBI single up the middle in his first professional at bat Wednesday night vs. the Orem, Utah Owlz, an affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels.
Frazier went 2-for-4 in his debut, a 9-3 victory, and 0-for-4 Thursday night when he drove in a run with an infield out as the Mustangs (9-13) fell 11-3 to the Owlz (13-10).
He is the highest Scarlet Knight selected in the draft since pitcher Bobby Brownlie was picked 21st overall by the Chicago Cubs in 2002.
Chris Buckley, Cincinnati senior scouting director, said the Reds plan to keep the 6-4, 220 pound athlete at shortstop, at least for now.
""He's big guy for that position,''said Buckley, a former assistant coach at Seton Hall University in the mid 1980's who said his mother, Carol, lives in Spring Lake.
""We've scouted Todd since high school,'' said Buckley. "'We give him a pretty good chance to stay at shortstop and we're going to leave him there as long as we can. If not, I'm sure in coming years he'll become a corner player.''
""I was a DH the first game and played short Thursday,'' said Frazier. "'They're going to work me in playing short.''
The next step up the Cincinnati farm chain for Frazier, 21, would presumably be Class A Dayton, Ohio, in the Midwest League.
""You don't ever want to rush a kid,'' said Buckley. "'But, heck, if he's doing really, really well, there would be no problem moving him.''
Frazier said his personal time table is to reach the major leagues in ""I hope two to three years.
""That's a good goal, that would be awesome. You've just got to keep working your way up and hitting the ball.''
""Players take care of their own careers,'' said Buckley. ""We're giving him an opportunity. We think he's a heck of a player.''
Frazier, a life long Boston Red Sox rooter, was the second pick by the Reds in the draft, following the club' first-round selection of Punxsutawney, Pa. High School catcher Devin Mesoraco.
""I'm a Reds fan now,'' Frazier said. "'I've had to change it up a little bit.''
Frazier is the third brother to be selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Charlie was picked by the Florida Marlins in 1999 and is currently an assistant baseball coach at Toms River South.
Jeff, whose Rutgers' home run record was broken by Todd, was selected in the third round by the Detroit Tigers in 2004 and was traded to the Seattle Mariners prior to this season.
Jeff is currently batting .338 for the Class A High Desert Mavericks in Adelanto, Calif.

Press story for Saturday on Bernie Goldwater

By TONY GRAHAM
STAFF WRITER

Eric Salkin, who roamed centerfield for coach Bernie Goldwater's Freehold Township High School baseball teams in the mid 1970's, said he could always be certain of one thing.
""We always felt like we were more prepared when we took the field than any other team,''said Salkin.
But Salkin was unprepared to learn Friday morning that Goldwater, 74, had passed away Thursday in Florida.
""It came as a shock,'' said Salkin, owner of Salkin's Jewel Case, Freehold Township, who who described himself as a ""dear friend of the family.''
Goldwater amassed 331 coaching victories in 24 seasons at Southern Freehold High School (now Howell) and Freehold Township. He also served as an athletic director in the school district.
The 12th winningest high school baseball coach in the history of the Shore Conference retired from coaching in 1988.
""I think people learned more under him in the two years they generally played for him than they did in all their other years (playing baseball) combined,'' said Salkin. ""I've heard other people say that.
""Bernie was tough but he was fair,'' said Salkin. ""Personally, I was more afraid of disappointing him than I was of losing the the game.''
Losing was something that was never a habit under Goldwater. According to Asbury Park Press reports he began coaching at Southern Freehold High School in 1965 and left the school seven years later with a 75-57 record.
In 17 seasons at Freehold Township Goldwater's intense managerial style led the Patriots to six Shore Conference divisional titles, the Shore Conference championship in 1985, and the NJSIAA Group III title in 1986 behind pitchers Adam Lazarus, Dan Donovan, and Jason Gross.
""Bernie was synonymous with Freehold Township High School and was widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the Shore,'' said 12th year Patriots coach Frank Gualtieri.
""Bernie always spoke his mind and fought for what he thought was right,'' said Gualtieri. ""He was old school and gave nobody any quarter. A guy like that is missed. His track record speaks for itself.''

Goldwater's funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Clayton and McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, according to owner Bob McGirr.
