2007 Associated Press All-State team/all three teams in Wednesday Press
Weinkofsky, Slate, Talerico named first team, Biserta second team, Casey third teamNEWARK — Ocean Township High School catcher Keith Weinkofsky, Christian Brothers Academy right-hander Kyle Slate and Toms River South outfielder Joe Talerico all concluded record-setting seasons by being named to the Associated Press' all-state baseball team Tuesday. Weinkofsky, the Asbury Park Press Player of the Year, set the Shore Conference's career home run record with 30 after he hit 11 this season. All of Weinkofsky's 2007 homers came from April 26 on. Marc Fink, a 1994 Jackson graduate and current Jackson assistant coach, held the previous conference record for homers with 27. A four-year varsity starter, Weinkofsky, who is one of two designated hitters named to the all-state first team, hit .447, had 39 RBI and led Ocean to a 24-7 record and its second straight NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III championship. He will attend Brookdale Community College. Slate, who was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 37th round of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft, set school records for lowest earned run average both in a season (0.38) and a career (1.02). He went 11-1 this season with a no-hitter in his first start against Freehold Township. He struck out 107, walked just nine and allowed only 36 hits in 73 innings. He has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Maine. Talerico, a three-year varsity starter, set a school season record for batting average (.556). He hit six homers to finish second on the school's all-time list with 16 and had 40 RBI. He will attend Seton Hall University. Old Tappan's Rob Segedin, who hit .520 with four homers this season, is the only repeater on the all-senior team selected by sports writers from around the state who covered high school baseball this spring. Rick Porcello and Evan Danieli, who led Seton Hall Prep to the Non-Public A title, were other members of the all-state pitching staff that also included Willie Beard of Spotswood and Dylan Cacciola of Westwood. Matt Szczur of Lower Cape May is the catcher, while Jaren Matthews of Don Bosco Prep was picked as the first baseman. Tom LaStella of St. Joseph in Montvale and Jesse Santo of Passaic Valley joined Segedin as the infielders. Dave Giuliani of West Deptford, Mike Lang of St. Peter's Prep are the other outfielders on the team and Adam Derner of River Dell is the other designated hitter. Dan Grovatt of Seneca was chosen as the utility player. The 27th pick overall by the Detroit Tigers in this year's draft, Porcello posted a 10-0 record with a 1.18 ERA. The right-hander struck out 112 and walked 15 in 71 innings.
Next year's All-Shore possibilities?
This could be fun to speculate. Let's start with ace Anthony DeSclafani from Colts Neck. I know I really extended my neck on that one. Brian Battalglia (Howell). The hit machine returns for his senior year. Pitcher Steve Fereno (TR East). Ist baseman Billy Hoermann (TR North). Had an outstanding sophomore season. SS Chris (or Brian as I like to call him) Bresnahan..St. Rose. A brilliant glove. Jamie Rosenkranz (Ocean). Pitcher, infielder, all around teriffic player. Todd Juliano (Shore). Banged 10 HR as a sophomore. I know I am leaving a few off here, and in some instances have done so purposely...( I've got to let you do some of the work, make your nominations and why you think might be on the All-Shore cusp in 2008).
NJSIAA new classifications
NJSIAA releases new classifications By STEVEN FALK STAFF WRITER The Monsignor Donovan High School football team, if it can qualify for the NJSIAA playoffs this fall, will likely play one of the powers in New Jersey scholastic football. The Griffins, who went 0-10 last year, will be classified as a Non-Public Group IV school for the 2007 season as the NJSIAA has released both its football and general group classifications for the 2007-08 school year. Monsignor Donovan had been classified as a Non-Public Group III school in recent years and had qualified for the Non-Public Group III playoffs four times since 1993, with the last time coming in 2004. The Griffins went 0-4 in those playoff games. Among the schools Monsignor Donovan could play in Non-Public Group IV are Don Bosco Prep, which has been ranked No.‚1 in the Gannett New Jersey Top 20 three of the last five seasons, including last year; St. Peter's Prep, which split two meetings with Don Bosco Prep in the Non-Public Group IV championship game the last two seasons and always strong Bergen Catholic. With Monsignor Donovan moving up to Non-Public Group IV, Red Bank Catholic dropped down to Non-Public Group III and will compete against the likes of perennial power St. Joseph (Montvale), defending Non-Public Group III state champion Immaculata and Delbarton. The Caseys had qualified for the Non-Public Group IV playoffs each of the last three seasons, losing to Don Bosco Prep, Camden Catholic and Seton Hall Prep. Another significant football group change will see Barnegat, which qualified for the South Jersey Group I playoffs last year in its first year as a varsity program, moving up to South Jersey Group II now that it has students grades 9-12 enrolled at the school. Also, Jackson Liberty, which is expected to play an independent varsity schedule this fall before it joins the Shore Conference in 2008, has been classified as a South Jersey Group II school for football. Significant changes in the general classification, which covers basketball, baseball, softball, soccer and tennis, will see Point Pleasant Boro move over to Central Jersey Group III from South Jersey Group II; Middletown South and Holmdel both move into Central Jersey Group III from North II, Group III and Allentown drop down to Central Jersey Group II from Central Jersey Group III. Freehold/Central coaches resign
Freehold's Steve Kochinski told me tonight he has stepped down for personal and professional reasons and plans to obtain a Master's degree. Freehold (according to our records) was 47-42 in four years under Kochinski, 8-11 this year. Paced by slugging first baseman Ryan Cuneo (who went on to Delaware U.) Freehold tied Wall for the B North title last year (10-2) and was 17-8 overall. Central's Jerry Frulio has also left coaching for personal reasons. Central was 4-14-1 this season, his sixth at the helm. His letter of resignation was accepted tonight (Wednesday) by the local board of education. Frulio - I believe (I am doing this from home) was a former Central player and may have played under the legendary Al Kunzman.
Carpenter Cup note
For what it's worth the Chester, Pa. team that eliminated the Shore team won the Cup. That, I believe, makes it three years in a row the Shore team has been ousted by the team that went on to win the championship.
POLL RESULTS of You're the GM
This is - of course - theoretical. Very. You're the GM of an expansion high school baseball team that is opening up next season in the theoretical TG Conference. The commissioner (me - who else?) is allowing you to begin your team by drafting any one pitcher and any one position player - senior, junior, etc. from a 2007 Shore Conference high school baseball team. What pitcher and what position player do you select - AND - and what current Shore Conference head coach do you choose to guide your first year team???I added up what we have so far as of Sunday morning June 24 Pitchers votes: Slate 9, DeSclafani 2, Ranaudo 2, ZecchinoPlayers votes - Tuna 6, Talerico 3, Rusbarsky 2, Cousins, Battaglia, BisertaCoaches votes - Frank 6, Del Pra 3, Huzzy, Morgan, James, Yorke, Malanga, and the immortal Bernie Goldwater (former long time Free. Township coach)

Ranaudo, Slate, Menna on the draft/other news
Wednesday night at the all-star game I spoke with our Shore Conference high school draftees on their possibilities of signing and here is what they said - as of Wednesday evening. I apoligize for not transcribing this sooner but I was busy with all sorts of end of season stuff.Remember...major league teams have until Aug. 15 to sign their players, otherwise they go back into the draft. All three of our players have signed with four-year `schools, so if they go the college route (as Todd Frazier did), they would not be draft eligible again until after their junior years. All three will play this summer for various traveling teams. Anthony Ranaudo (St. Rose) 11th round pick no. 350 by Texas, signed with LSU.
""They didn't make me an official offer yet. They came to my house to visit. We just talked about what we're going to start with. He (Teaxas scout Rick Majsko ) just came over to get aquainted with us. He's going to come to all my games, just watch me throughout the summer. Hopefully we can go above slot money. If everything works out I'll go play pro.'' Kyle Slate (CBA) round 37 pick no. 1126 by Philadelphia, signed with the University of Maine""I talked to the scout a couple of times and we're probably going to get together like the next two weeks. They're probably not going to make an offer until like July, August. They're going to watch me pitch over the summer and see how I progress. If I do what they want me to do, it means more money, a higher price. Hopefully, if it's the way I want it, then it'll make something work. ""It would be a long shot for me to actually sign. Most likely I'm going to college. I already told my college coach there's a good chance I'll be there in September. They're banking on me coming there. They said I'll be starting starting right away. I'm looking forward to it'' J.C. Menna (RBC) 39th round pick no 1167 by Pittsburgh signed with James Madison.
"'It all comes down to this summer. The Pirates are going to send a scout every time I pitch. Around Aug. 15th, which is the deadline, they're going to see how much money they can give me, my contract has to be looked over. ""It's really a 50-50 chance ( he might sign). I'd really like to play pro ball right out of high school. It's a great honor. There's really nothing better than being drafted right out of high school. I was drafted as a pitcher, but I'm going to James Madison as a shortstop.'' Other news: Paul Rosario and Adam Murray of Monsignor Donovan will continue their baseball careers at Brookdale Community College and Chestnut Hill College (Philadelphia) respectively.

2007 Asbury Park Press Baseball Player of the Year
BY TONY GRAHAM STAFF WRITER Ocean's Keith Weinkofsky still recalls the moment in the 2004 Shore Conference Tournament. That was when the player batting ahead of him was feared far more than the youngster promoted to varsity as a freshman. ""They walked, I think it was Bobby Fox, to get to me,'' Weinkofsky said. Doesn't seem like something that would have happened now, does it? Weinkofsky said he homered to put Ocean ahead in that game, and since then the long balls have been flying. The senior catcher, who this spring established a new Shore Conference career record of 30 home runs, is the 2007 Asbury Park Press Baseball Player of the Year. ""That was my most memorable home run,'' said Weinkofsky, referring to his freshman year blast in the SCT. His longest home run? ""One at Wall last year was pretty far,'' Weinkofsky said. "'Some people are saying it went like 490 (feet), maybe 500. I got pretty good wood on that one.'' Now that his career is complete Weinkofsky, who will play next spring at Brookdale Community College, placed his high school record in in perspective. ""It's something special, it's a great accomplishment,'' Weinkofsky said. ""I'm very thankful for doing it. It's been a fun ride since my freshman year.'' ""Tuna"" (Weinkofsky's nickname due to his resemblance to former NFL coach Bill Parcells), tagged 11 home runs this season and last on his way to surpassing the previous mark of 27 set by 1994 Jackson Memorial graduate Marc Fink. Weinkofsky's bat seemed to warm up with the weather. He hit only one of his home runs before April 26, a three-run shot vs. St. John Vianney April 23, 2005 in the Monmouth County Tournament. He connected when it mattered. Weinkofsky blasted 15 in tournament settings, helping Ocean to a record of 22-4 when he went deep. While Fink's record lasted 13 years, Weinkofsky would like to see his mark stand for some time. ""I'm hoping for a while,'' Weinkofsky said. But, with records made to be broken, Todd Juliano of Shore Regional is already showing up in the rear view mirror. He hit 10 this season as a sophomore. ""If the kid from Shore has a good two years, then congratulations to him,'' Weinkofsky said. ""But I'm hoping it stays for a little bit.''
2007 Asbury Park Press Baseball Coach of the Year
By TONY GRAHAM STAFF WRITER When he signed on eight years ago to launch varsity baseball at Colts Neck High School, Mike Yorke had a dream. ""I had a vision a couple of years back of building a beautiful field, of having a great place for kids to come who were passionate about baseball,'' Yorke said. ""Now I see a lot of these things coming true. ""A lot of what I thought about a bunch of years ago is now coming to fruition.'' Never more so than this spring. Yorke, who guided the Cougars (22-7) to a school record for wins, their first Shore Conference divisional championship (Class A North Public) and, to their first Shore Conference Tournament championship, is the 2007 Asbury Park Press Baseball Coach of the Year. A mostly veteran team, led by seniors Dom Hayes and A.J. Rusbarsky, and with a pitching staff anchored by jnior Anthony DeSclafani, Colts Neck powered through the SCT. The Cougars eliminated No. 1 seed Toms River North and No. 4 seed Ocean to reach the SCT final vs. No. 2 CBA. Though Colts Neck had been swept by CBA in the regular season, it was a different story in the SCT championship at FirstEnergy Park, Lakewood. Hayes unloaded a game-sealing grand slam and DeSclafani muffled the Colts as the Cougars recorded an 8-2 win. DeSclafani said Yorke always kept the team on en even keel. ""We always play to win the game at hand and never look ahead,'' said DeSclafani, an eight-game winner. "That's what we did this year, and it paid off as we kept moving on to the next round (in the SCT).'' ""That game (the final vs. CBA) was electric, at least that's the way I felt,'' Yorke said. ""I felt good for all the kids who had a chance to play in that atmosphere.'' Now, Yorke said, the challenge is to consistently be among the upper echelon in the Shore Conference. ""At least in my mind, I'm thinking about 20 wins and some kind of championship every year,'' Yorke said. ""That's where it seems like all the real good programs … the Oceans, the CBAs, the Walls and the Toms River schools get to.'' And that's where Yorke wants Colts Neck to be.
2007 AsburyPark Press Final Top 10 Baseball Poll
1. Colts Neck (22-7) - last poll No 4. As the No. 8 seed roared through the Shore Conference Tournamentclipping No. 9 Rumson and then knocking off the No. 1 seed (TR North), No. 4 Ocean, and then No. 2 CBA in the final. Overall, won 11 of last 14 to claim its first Press final top 10 No. 1 ranking in season of many firsts. 2. CBA (25-6) - last poll No. 1. Class a North Non-Public champs fell into puzzling batting slump for most of its final five games but salvaged its post season with win over wall in Monmouth County final. 3. Wall (21-8) - last poll No. 2. The epitome of a team. No superstars, relied on fundamentals and pitching. Won the Class B North championship. 4. Ocean (24-7) - last poll No. 3. Probably hoped for a little more especially after a dominating 21-1 spurt. Won the NJSISAA CJ III championship only to suffer a bizarre defeat in the state semifinal. 5. Toms River North (24-6) - last poll No. 5. Mainly relied on pitching led by Chad` Geran and Zach Brebner to claim sole grip on first place in Class A South for first time since the early 90's. 6. SJ Vianney (19-8) - last poll No. 6. Solid all year, led by ace Paul Bacigalupi. Lost two tough games to CBA in its final week. 7. Jackson (20-8) - Last poll No. 7. Took the regular season measure of TR East and TR South in Class A South, no small feat. 8. TR East (20-7) - Last poll No. 8. Season ended early for Ocean County champs. 9. Toms River South (21-8)- Last poll No. 9. Appeared poised to unleash some major late season damage but instead lost three 1-0 games. 10. St. Rose (19-5) - Last poll No. 10. Had hoped for a longer post season, but will start 2008 with a 32 game Class B Central winning streak. Dropped out: none. Some others being considered: Rumson (15-6). My ranking criteria 1. Latest results, trends. 2. Overall body of work. 3. Head to head match ups. 4. Perceived team abilities.

Monmouth County wins all-star game/Hayes, O'Hanlon provide spark
By TONY GRAHAM STAFF WRITER LAKEWOOD - It seemed Dom Hayes couldn't wait to grab a bat at Wednesday night's Shore Conference Baseball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Game. Hayes, whose final varsity plate appearance for Colts Neck High School one week ago to the day was a grand slam that clinched the Shore Conference Tournament championship at FirstEnergy Park, returned to those surroundings Wednesday night. The former Cougar singled and doubled and scored two runs in an 11-6 victory by Monmouth County over Ocean. ""There must be something about this ball park and that (home team) dugout,'' said Hayes. ""Same dugout, same everything,'' he said. For Hayes, who has signed with NJIT, playing with and against players he had only read or heard about made Wednesday all that much more worth while. "'You hear so many things about all these kids and you finally come together,'' he said. "'Everybody gets the respect they deserve and it's a mutual respect. And it's good. Everybody comes here, has fun, and they all love the game.'' No one was having more fun Wednesday than Keansburg catcher James O'Hanlon. ""I love playing here, the pressure being on, it was a lot of adrenaline,'' said O'Hanlon. His two run single in the third inning, followed by a two-run single by Jim Laufer (CBA) accounted for four runs as Monmouth wiped out an early 1-0 deficit. "'It (the hit) felt amazing,''said O'Hanlon. ""I just wanted to scream. It felt really good. I was looking forward to that (opportunity). I didn't want to do bad. It put our team in the lead which was huge. "'We got the win and I helped start it,'' said O'Hanlon who said he plans to continue his baseball career at Brookdale Community College. ""I'm going as a catcher and if they need me to pitch I can do that, too,'' he said. Monmouth, which claimed a 2-1 lead in the series since its switch to FirstEnergy Park, put the game away with four runs in the seventh that made it 11-1. Dave Laufer (CBA) stroked an RBI single to center and Mike Galeotafiore (CBA) launched a three-run triple to deep right. An infield RBI single by Ryan Casey (Manchester), an RBI double by by Brady Doyle (TR East) and an Anthony Mazzetta (TR North) sacrifice fly keyed a four-run seventh for Ocean. Monies raised from Wednesday night, which also included a later game between New Jersey Troopers and a team of Shore Conference Alumni, will benefit the "Going to Bat for Brian" and "Light Up Manchester" charities. ""This is why we coach,'' said Kevin James, Rumson-Fair Haven coach and director of Wednesday's events. "'This is why we do what we do,'' said James. ""To get this kind of game for these players is a wonderful experience.''
Asbury Park names football coach
By STEVEN FALK STAFF WRITER Don Sofilkanich, a former head coach at Holmdel High School and an assistant coach at New Brunswick High School the past five seasons, was named Asbury Park High School's head football coach recently, Asbury Park athletic director Ron Standridge said Wednesday. Sofilkanich will be Asbury Park's third head coach in the last three seasons Matt Ardizzone coached the team last season. He was approved as head coach by the Asbury Park Board of Education the day before the season-opener after Joe Stinson, the Blue Bishops' head coach from 2000-2005 was not rehired as head coach for the 2006 season by the school board less than two months before the season-opener. Asbury Park went 1-9 last season with six losses by six points or less. Stinson, who went 24-37 with three NJSIAA apperances in his six seasons at Asbury Park, was recently hired as the head coach at Linden High School. A disciple of New Brunswick head coach John Quinn, Sofilkanich was at New Brunswick when Standridge was the athletic director there. During his time on the New Brunswick staff, the Zebras went 53-7 with NJSIAA sectional championships last year and in 2003. He was the head coach at Holmdel in 1999, when the Hornets went 6-4, shared the Shore Conference Class C South championship with Monmouth and Freehold and qualified for the NJSIAA playoffs. ""I felt he was the candidate with the most experience,'' Standridge said. IN OTHER FOOTBALL NEWS: Rob Paneque, Manchester High School's head football coach the past three seasons, said Wednesday he has resigned to become a vice principal at Wall High School. Paneque said the Wall Township Board of Education approved his appointment Tuesday night. ""From a coaching standpoint, this was a very difficult decision. Professionally, this was an opportunity I felt had to try and take advantage of,'' Paneque said. Manchester went 12-18 in Paneque's three seasons, with its first-ever NJSIAA playoff appearance in Paneque's first season in 2004. The Hawks were 4-6 last season. Before he came to Manchester, Paneque was an assistant coach at Wall High School for four seasons. Manchester athletic director Keith Lister said that he hopes to have the coaching vacancy filled by the end of the month.

And John Lightbody (TREast) pitched a scoreless top ninth for Ocean. Ocean batting bottom ninth facing Devin Cousins (Long Branch): Chad Geran (TR North) doubled but was stranded. ( Joe Brescia of Holmdel pitching for Monmouth with two away in the ninth). Doyle safe at second on error on liner to right, run scores. Ground out, game over.

This from coach Todd Schmitt (Wall, Carp Cup co-coach) - " Todays game was again a rain out. However Delaware South can not field a team for the required rain date, so we were moved forward to the next round by the Carpenter Cup officals."" We play Monday June 18 at 1:00pm." As far as I can tell they will play SOL National/BiCentennial, which topped Berks County, Pa., 6-5. Well.. they got by that first game!!! Got word from their respective high school baseball coaches that recent college commitments include TR North senior senior ace Chad Geran to Monmouth U. , Manchester's Mr. Versatility - Ryan Casey - will play for Brookdale, and Rumson pitcher Ben Miller to Rowan....
Former TR East/Brookdale player signs with Arizona

Paul Principe said that his son will spend a few days at the Diamondbacks' mini-camp in Tucson, Ariz.Arizona will then assign him to one of its two Rookie League teams in either Missoula, Mont., or Yakima, Wash. oth of those teams begin their seasons next week. Paul Principe said the Diamondbacks want his son to play center field. Principe, who attended the University of New Orleans before transferring to Brookdale, hit .417 with six home runs this spring.
Carpenter Cup Postponed
Monday's first round Carpenter Cup all-star baseball game between Jersey Shore and Delaware South was postponed by lightning. It has been rescheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Pennsylvania. Co-coach Todd Schmitt, head coach at Wall High School, said CBA senior ace Kyle Slate (11-1) will be the starting pitcher for the Shore team. Schmitt also said slugger Pat Biserta (Point Boro) will not be able to play Tuesday (graduation) and that pitcher J.C. Menna (RBC) is a question mark.
Will Jersey Shore take a sip from the (Carpenter) Cup?
this story to run in Monday Press (or Tuesday, or Wednesday, or 2009 ,or whenever there's space - but anyway - at least it's on the log.... Latest rosters provided by the SBCA are included below the story...... By TONY GRAHAM STAFF WRITER The regular Shore Conference high school baseball season may be over. Even the NJSIAA Tournament has been completed. But high school baseball 2007 at the Shore lives on. Led by a host of sluggers including all-time Shore Conference home run king Keith Weinkofsky of Ocean Township and pitching aces Keith Slate of CBA and Anthony Ranaudo of St. Rose a team of Jersey Shore All-Stars hopes to snap a two-year Carpenter Cup slump beginning Monday. The Shore team, which has been ousted in the first game of the 16-team tournament of teams from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware the last two years, launches its bid for the 2007 title beginning 4 p.m. Monday vs. Delaware South at the University of Pennsylvania's Meiklejohn Stadium. Two other events Wednesday at FirstEnergy Park highlight the week. The annual Shore Baseball Coaches Association Monmouth vs. Ocean Senior All-Star nine-inning game will take place at 5 p.m. It will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. seven-inning game between Shore Conference Alumni and a team comprised of New Jersey State troopers, some of whom are former Shore Conference players. Proceeds from the Wednesday games are dedicated to the "Going to Bat for Brian" Foundation and the "Light up Manchester" Fund Drive. Brian Malast, a former standout athlete at Manchester Township High School remains paralyzed in the wake of an automobile accident suffered while on the job with the New Jersey State Police in September of 2005. Also, Manchester Township High School plans to use proceeds from the game for lights for its football field so that Craig Leppert, a sophomore varsity linebacker in 2006, will be able to continue his football career. Leppert has erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), resulting from a rare inherited deficiency of the enzyme ferrochelatase. The reduced activity of the enzyme makes people with EPP highly sensitive to sunlight, which can cause an itchy, burning sensation on the skin. It's painful. But worse, abnormally high levels of protoporphyrin resulting from sun exposure can also cause liver disease. Leppert managed to play football last year wearing protective garb. ""Anything we can do to help young athletes is a wonderful thing,'' said Kevin James, Rumson-Fair Haven coach and director of Wednesday's events. John Musolf, Manchester and Carpenter Cup coach, said he feels this year's Shore team has the potential to do damage. Jersey Shore won the title in 2002 led by former Toms River East ace Ryan Doherty and in 1994 powered by former Jackson slugger and now assistant coach Marc Fink. ""We are hoping this is going to be a year we can make some noise,'' said Musolf. ""We're hoping to get by that first game. I feel if we do we're going to make a run.'' Jersey Shore has lost in consecutive years by one-run to teams that have gone on to win the Cup including Burlington County in 2006. "'You have to put it together that first game,'' said Musolf. ""I think getting by that is most important. ""We're definitely going to go after them (Delaware South). I feel we have the kids to do it.'' The first and seconds rounds will be played at Penn with the semi-final and championship title games at Citizens Bank Park June 21 and 22. The Carpenter Cup roster was selected by a special SBCA Carpenter Cup Committee while coaches from Monmouth and Ocean counties, respectively, put together the Senior All-Star rosters. 2007 JERSEY SHORE CARPENTER CUP TEAM ROSTER Pitchers: J.C. Ranaudo gets drafted by Texas
By STEVEN FALK STAFF WRITER Anthony Ranaudo was going to spend Friday night doing some homework. No, not actual school work, but research on the Texas Rangers. The Rangers selected the 6-foot-7 St. Rose senior right-hander in the 11th round, pick No.‚350 overall, Friday in Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft. "'They came to a few of my games and we had a little contact, but not too much,'' Ranaudo said. ""I'm going to look at the Rangers' situation and see how that works. I hope it is a good situation.'' Ranaudo, who has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Louisiana State University, had more contact with at least two other teams in recent days. He said both the Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers had visited him at his house. Ranaudo said Milwaukee had called Thursday during the first day of the draft and told him they wanted to select him in the third round with the 101st selection overall. Ranaudo said he turned Milwaukee's offer down. ""My family didn't think it was the right situation,'' Ranaudo said. ""I don't have any feeling of regret. I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. We're in a different situation now. ""To get drafted in the 11th round is an honor. To be considered for the third-round is even more of an honor.'' Ranaudo, who went 5-2 this season and 21-4 for his scholastic career, now has to decide whether to sign with the Rangers, or decline their offer and spend the next three seasons at LSU. If Ranaudo does sign with Texas, he would likely spend his summer playing for a Texas Rookie League team in either Arizona or Spokane, Wash. Because the Rangers, who entered Friday with the Major League's worst record at 21-39, are an organization in desperate need of pitching, they could put the hard-throwing Ranaudo on a fast track through their minor league system. ""As long as the money situation is right, I'd like to play pro ball and live my dream,'' Ranaudo said. ""But, if it isn't, I'm going down to LSU. It's not a bad situation. It's a win, win situation for me and my family.'' Ranaudo, who said in the weeks preceding the draft, he had participated in workouts at both Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium, indicated negotiations with Texas will begin today. ""They haven't given a number value yet and we don't really have a specific number (monetary) in mind,'' Ranaudo said. Three other Shore area players were selected Friday, the second and final day of the draft. Forty-five of the 50 rounds of the draft took place Friday. Brookdale Community College sophomore outfielder Jim Principe, a former Toms River East player who helped the Jersey Blues reach the Junior College Division III World Series this spring, was picked in the 37th round and 1,116 overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Christian Brothers Academy senior right-hander Kyle Slate, who went 11-1 this year and has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Maine, went in the 37th round, pick No.‚1,126 overall by the Philadelphia Phillies and Red Bank Catholic senior right-hander J.C. Menna, who went 4-2 this season and has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend James Madison, was selected in the 39th round, pick No.‚1,167 overall, by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Principe, who attended the University of New Orleans before he transferred to Brookdale, said he was not sure what he was going to do. ""I want to (sign), if the situation is right, but I've got to do what's best for me and my family,'' said Principe, who indicated he did not expect much money because he was drafted so late. ""I just want the opportunity for advancement, to play every day and move up through the ranks.'' Principe said he would attend a four-year college, if he doesn't sign with Arizona. ""I have a couple (four-year colleges) in mind,'' Principe said.

Comments Fastball: Ranaudo throws his fastball in the 87-92 mph range. His comfort zone grades out as an average pitch. Fastball movement: Ranaudo does not have much life or movement on his fastball. Curve: Right now, Ranaudo throws a below-average curve, but it projects to be an average offering. He throws it now in the 72-75 mph range. Changeup: Ranaudo does throw a changeup at 77-79 mph, but it's in its infancy stages and he doesn't throw it that much. Control: His command is currently below-average. Poise: He's got average aggressiveness on the mound, but is fairly agile and has good aptitude. Physical Description: Ranaudo is a big right-hander who has a Jason Hirsh-like body type. Medical Update: Healthy. Strengths: Arm strength and big body along with all the projections that come along with it. Weaknesses: He's really only got one pitch right now and two that might eventually become Major League average. His delivery can get mechanical at times. Summary: Ranaudo hasn't pitched all that much and it shows. He's got a big body that has many scouts dreaming of projection, but there's not as much "now" to him past his fastball. His secondary pitches have a chance but are below-average currently. Someone will take a chance on him and hope they can harness the potential in a very large frame and help him meet those projections.

CBA salvages its week
By TONY GRAHAM STAFF WRITER TINTON FALLS - CBA senior first baseman Jim Laufer sounded more relieved than ecstatic. ""We weren't hitting, everyone was slumping at the same time,'' said Laufer of a week in which CBA fell Tuesday and Wednesday in the NJSIAA and Shore Conference Tournaments. ""Finally, one hit,'' he said. ""I guess one hit is all it takes.'' Laufer Thursday led off the sixth inning with his school single season record 11th home run, a line shot over the leftfield fence at Monmouth Regional High School, that propelled the defending champion Colts (25-6) to a 2-1 victory over Wall (21-8) in the Monmouth County Tournament championship game. Laufer stepped into a 3-1 pitch from senior right-hander Craig Hughes (5-2). ""It was a fastball,''said Laufer. ""He left it up a little bit. I knew he had to come in with it. I just sat on it. Luckily it was there.'' A bases-loaded single in the fifth inning by sophomore Dan Avella tied the score, 1-1. ""To be 2-1 in this championship game, it was a great game,'' said Todd Schmitt, Wall coach. "'Unfortunately we were on the wrong side of the 2-1.'' ""It seemed like everything was just spinning down,'' said Laufer. ""We had to stop it and Falcone pitched a great game.'' Nick Falcone, a sophomore left-hander (2-0), held Wall to the one unearned run and two hits over five innings in which he struck out five and walked three. ""He's in the making,'' said CBA senior Mike Galeotafiore who closed out the game with two innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. ""I have good feeling about him,''said Galeotafiore. ""If he develops one more pitch he'll be number one next year, I think.'' Wall took the lead in the fourth inning when Drew Pinero worked a walk and scored on an error. Galeotafiore said Tuesday's defeat, 1-0 in eight innings to St. Joseph's Metuchen, had been especially hard to swallow. ""That was the most heartbreaking of all,'' he said. ""That (a state championship) was what we really wanted.'' But Thursday Galeotafiore, a right-hander, made certain CBA would end its season in positive fashion striking out five including a game-ender that followed Dan Camano' second single of the afternoon. ""I don't have much of a stamina for an arm,''said Galeotafiore. ""I get to throw my hardest and see what I can do. ""I enjoy coming in in pressure situations. It makes you focus a lot more.'' Schmitt said 2007 marked the "'third or fourth time'' Wall has cracked the 20-win plateau. ""In the beginning of the year no one thought we had anything,'' he said. Instead, the Knights went on to defeat favored Ocean to win the Shore Conference Class B North championship. ""That's six years in a row we've won at least one championship,'' said Schmitt. "'We're proud of that. ""It's disappointing to lose (this game). But to lose to a CBA team, as good as they are, not much I can say about that.'' Jim Laufer's twin brother, Dave, singled and doubled Thursday for CBA. Jim broke the school home run record formerly held by catcher Anthony Buffone who coach Marty Kenney said blasted 10 in as a senior in 2000. Buffone later went on to star at the University of Maryland and was a 22nd round draft pick of Philadelphia in 2004.
